Smile Stocks by Alvin White

Many of you know I am a collector of engraved 44 Magnums (and one Combat Magnum) by Alvin White. I also collect his carved stocks when I can find them (not often!!!). The stocks shown below were recently purchased in the Amoskeag Auction and are made of rosewood.

Bill

Nice looking stocks Bill, did you score those others as well with the "V" pattern carved out of the top edges?

Daniel...I did not bid on those stocks as I have a pair that is very similar and the ivory diamonds did not appeal to me.

Besides the wonderful items, I like Doc44's posts because the title lets me know what is in the thread. No cuteness, or trying to be clever. Good writing.

I'd have to agree, you certainly got the two nicest sets that were available. I hope you'll plan on displaying your stock collection at the next symposium that comes out west. I'd vote it the best display regardless if you had them displayed on any guns or not.

Be a good boy and compare these stocks to the ones on the Jarvis pair.

Bill,
Your new grips look amazing. I assume the inlay is ivory. I don't believe anybody currently does that kind of grip work. Did the grips come on a gun or did you get them all by themselves?

Congrats, Bill, on a primo acquisition. You just don't find stocks like that in the junk grips pile at the local gun shows any more!

The stocks were offered without being attached to a revolver. The inlay in each panel is ivory.

Thanks for the picture. I agree with Bill....the ivory inlay is not appealing to me on this pair.

Here you go Mike - but two matching sets is hardly a "collection" (In other words, I'd love to have more of them...).

Doc, I know that many engraved guns were marked "A. A. White", are any of your stock so marked? Just curious...

SDH...I have quite a few pairs of carved stocks by AAW, one pair of stags, and one pair of ivories. None are marked by Mr. White.

Thanks Doc. I've admired grips like those for literally decades. That style of grips was obviously made by the same hand, and emulated by a few less skilled. As with many of our handmade collectable, especially the Really Fine Quality items, I just wish they had some makers mark. I've always wondered if White didn't have some highly skilled help?
I've read a bit about his company, A.A. White Engravers and the patron sponsors and wondered what was the rest of the story. AAWE left a legacy of many high grade collectables, if it (he) was a one man shop Alvin must have really been making the chips fly, in wood, ivory and metal.
As an independent craftsman I have a clue how much time and expertise it takes to create something as lovely as those grips. Do you have an idea where I might read more about the company, its history and people involved? Are you the guy that is supposed to write something to that effect about AAW?
Rudolph Kornbrath left much of his engraving unsigned but fortunately some was signed and much shown as smoke pulls in his brochures leaving us something to study and help identify his style and his "hand". Much has been written about Kornbrath. I'd sure enjoy some more info on AA White~~

SDH...I have read a few things about AAW. Mr. White was the principal of A. A. White Engravers, Inc. that was formed by Herb Glass in 1961 and managed by Larry Wilson for many years, until being disbanded in 1976. At one point, twelve master craftsmen were employed (Denise Thirion is a well known engraver). Prior to 1961, Mr. White worked independently and did work for S&W and Colt (and others).

I have some articles on AAW I can photocopy and send you if you are interested.
