1957 Vintage 4 Screw 6.5 inch 44 Magnum Gun Show find - Stocks are unknown to me.
Purchased a 4 screw 44 magnum S169xxx this weekend so I am guessing it is 1957. Not a safe queen by any stretch of the imagination as it has some significant holster wear. Tight lock up and buttery smooth action and trigger as they were back then. The stocks that were on it are unknown to me and I would like some help identifying them. I am not going to leave them on the gun as I picked up a set of football relief diamond targets this morning at the same show from another vendor (they need the thick varnish removed but the overall condition is OK for this 44 - not worth a good set of cokes IMHO). The W/O rear sight is still original (flat head screw)but the W/O is worn away. Also traded into a 1950 vintage 6 inch K22 at this same show (much of the blue is worn off but for a trade @ $250 worth of stuff on my part I felt it was well worth it) that had a set of post 1968 magnas on it so I will need to find a shooter set to set it back right. Pretty good father's day for me.

Pretty sure those are vintage Herrett stocks. I believe there is another thread that has those pictured in their old catalogs

I've not seen that very distinctive thumb rest on known Herrett stocks. It is designed to curl your thumb down which is odd. The checkering all the way around the front strap does match older Herretts.

Have not cleaned the thick varnish off of the diamond targets yet but they should be just fine after I clean them upon this old 44.

Nice score! Probably from around March 1957.

The factory diamond stocks cleaned up really well after some work to get the thick varnish out of the checkering. I also found that the w/o on the rear sight was still there when I degreased it prior to trying to put paint into the w/o groove.

I agree with this. They look like Herretts except for the thumb rest. However, I believe that my knowledge of Herrett stocks only runs back to the sixties, so it would not surprise me if somewhat older stocks were a bit different.

They're older Herrett's. The distinctive jig marks on the backsides are the giveaway. That particular curved thumbrest isn't all that uncommon, either.

Thank you -db- and the other experts for figuring out that they are Herrett's.

They were called Double Action Trooper- see Mike Priwer's album for their '64 catalog.
