Pre Model 24 Engraved by Master Engraver Neil Hartliep
Hi
This gun was Engraved by Master Engraver Neil Hartliep in the the middle 1950's.
The gun was shipped in 1955 to a Sporting goods store In Minn.
Neil was a Master Engraver and did Engraving for Winchester, and other gun
companies. I have only seen about 8 revolvers that were engraved by him.

Heres a close up of the screw they are engraved.

Neil was quite a guy. I met him first at the early FEGA meetings in LasVegas in the 80's. I caught up with him again when he taught some engraving seminars at a local college in the 90's. I stopped in to just say hello and ended up staying for the afternoon.
He always thought of himself as a working man's engraver and never priced himself out of reach.
He put out a lot of work over a career and influenced many people to either try steel engraving or at least become interested in the techniques.
Always active in & supportive of the NRA.
A down to earth guy who was always approachable, never took himself too seriously and always had time to talk and take time to help someone through a problem.

Jim,
On the right side of the gun, is it just me or do the screw heads
look disproportionately small?
I'm learning here so please bear with me.
Does the engraver ever do anything with the screw heads such
as narrow them or bevel them?
Or perhaps it's just the engraving style that makes my eyes see them
as being smaller.
Always learning,
Thanks, Chuck

I agree. A friend of mine's son entered a raffle while working in Alaska over 30 years ago. The raffle was for a factory engraved Colt Python with Walrus Ivory grips, it involved guessing the correct time that a particular river broke free of ice...you had to guess the date and time and the kid just lucked out and picked the right numbers for one ticket the price was a dollar. The kid kept the Python in is dad's safe until one day when he needed a couple of bucks to fix his *** vehicle and ended up selling the pistol without checking with his dad first, dad was a little upset...It was equally beautiful, prettiest handgun I'd ever held in hand.

Hartliep engraved Mod 24
I am afraid you have some incorrect information about Neil Hartliep. He was my father and he never did engrave for Winchester or any other gun company. He did engrave maybe less than half a dozen per personal requests for gun makers but he never worked for them.
He also did not decide to become an engraver until the fall of 1963 and did not do any guns for customers until after 1964 or so. If your gun was engraved by him it was after that date. If it is factory engraved then it was not by him.

Welcome to the Forum, Glen.
Any information you can provide about your father's work will be much appreciated.

No matter who did the engraving, and grips it is STUNNING work. The ivory grips are something else.

Glen
Thanks for the information. I was only going by what I was told. I talked to his brother at a gun show in Washington. I have seen 4 Smith and Wessons engraved by him The guns i have seen are all signed by him on the bottom of the trigger guard.
the other guns were a 3844 heavy duty owned by Bill patteson, and two K frame Targets.
There were about 10 guns displayed by a member of the minn. gun club about 5 or 6 years ago my gun was in the display.
When i get time I will take a picture of the marking on the gun that shows it is your dads work.

Hello Jim.
I am certain that it was engraved by dad, I recognize the style of the leaves and scroll work that he used in the early 60s. I just wanted to clear up that it is not factory engraved. The only possibility for it being engraved prior to 1964 is if he did it for himself as a practice piece and then sold it at a later date. There are some other guns out there that were his early practice pieces that he did in the 50s while he was teaching himself how to engrave that he later sold off in the 70s.
This is definitely one of his earlier pieces.
