Model 10 or 1899?
Saw what I thought was a Model 10 M&P at gun show this weekend, but passed since there was some pitting on the finish. The S/N was five digit, 246XX....now I'm not sure which model it was. Asking $450....did I pass on the wrong thing? I didn't really inspect it as much as I should have. Thanks.

The gun is an early 1902. It has a straight-taper barrel, with no shoulder, and has an
extractor lug under the barrel to capture the extractor rod. I'd have to see pictures to
comment on the price, but its a scarce gun. They are seldom seen.

Ron, As Mike says, that's a hard gun to find and depending on condition, markings and barrel length, target or service sighted, it could be worth several times the asking price. You could check with the show promoter to get the table holder's contact info., if you want to follow up. Ed.

Did the early 1902's normaly have a pinned front sight? Or would one configured that way be considered a semi-target ?

Hello OP, that is a head scratcher. At $450, I would have stopped and pondered for a bit. With no pics, hard to tell. When you get it , pls. give some pics and more info. Best, Mike

Stopped by, got more info. six inch barrel, four line, non-pinned front sight, no model markings or patent dates. Serial number begins with a "C", so may be something other than I thought.

C24xxx would be from the very late 1940s.

I've been looking up serials and shipping dates in old posts for C-prefix M&P's lately with an eye on buying one; I feel reasonably certain I can narrow C 24xxx to likely fairly late 1948, or very early 1949. (Note my cautious phrasing ; actual shipping dates aren't that predictable).

I agree, Absalom. That is exactly why I wrote "very late 1940s." That would be '48 or '49.
And I think you are correct, it would likely be near the end of 1948 or the beginning of 1949. On the other hand, I used to own a one-line K-22 that Roy says did not leave the factory until December of 1949, so shipping dates can be way out of whack with what we often expect.

So, I guess the question is should I go for it at $450? Except for a little freckling and finish wear, it seems to be in good shape. Thanks in advance.

For a decent but unremarkable C-Prefix M&P with a 6-inch barrel, the $450 price isn't out of bounds, but it certainly is not a bargain and it's not an uncommon gun. It's not possible to judge condition without pictures. I would pass unless you have a compelling reason to get that gun now; you're definitely not letting some rare collectible go, and if you want one, it should be possible to find decent ones starting in the mid-300's or so.
For comparison, I bought the M&P pictured, from 1946, which based on your description should be the same configuration as the one you're looking at, out of Southern California, I think early last year, for $300 incl. shipping, adapter and Jinks letter. That was a bargain .
