Question Pre-Model Identity Help Please

Gentlemen,
I believe a local pawn shop has a pre-model S&W on the shelf. No model number on the crane, S/N is K 2886xx. I'd estimate it to be in 75% condition. Any help on identity and value would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Monte

This serial number is likely from 1956 and it is an adjustable sight K frame revolver. Could be a 22 (Pre 18 or Pre 17) or it could be a 38 (Pre 14 or Pre15). Value depends on condition, barrel length, local market, etc. Hope this helps.

Steve

4 in barrel in 38 would be a Combat Masterpiece that became the Model 15. One in 75% condition would be a good shooter but would have limited collector value. Here in Illinois, this would likely sell for $300-$350 in a private sale. A gun shop would likely want $400 or so.

Thank you for the info. I'll be on my way to pick it up if it is still there.

The CM is fairly common, but nonetheless desirable as a shooter. It probably would have shipped around mid-1957 based on nearby SNs on my list.

You can't beat an early Combat Masterpiece, as a shooter. 4" and adjustable sights. Rides easily on a belt and can be sighted for any load you choose. My first good handgun was a lot like yours.

Edit;
Mine was used, from a home based pawn shop and my mom had to sign for it as I was only about 19. It was after 1968.
