Victory model marked " CMC"...
What does the electropencilled marking mean? The gun is a 4" .38 spl w/ wood stocks & a lanyard ring. Thanks!

Photos? It's probably someones initials, perhaps a prior owner. The only Victory Models I'm aware of with "unit" markings, that were applied by electric pencil, were guns issued to the Civil Defense units, mostly in the Seattle, WA., area. Ed.

It is still an active auction. So, no pics are available. It does resemble the one in closed auction listing.

Auction? What auction?
This "C.M.C. - C.D." stamping definitely occurs more than once, therefore it's likely an organization; we've got two examples now, so Cleophus Manfredi Cunningham is obviously out (nice one, SP). But the letters were scratched in by individuals without high aesthetic standards .
I also think I see something else in the new specimen (second picture). Unless the topstrap is mirror-polished and reflects the carpet pattern, there seems to be the US PROPERTY stamping discernible. That unfortunately would probably mean that lettering the gun would not solve the puzzle, since it would be a (later re-purposed) ordinary military-shipped gun.

My "CMC-CD" marked Victory is marked with U.S.Property markings on topstrap and is most likely a post-WW2 Civil Defense gun. I have tracked 2 others with same CMC-CD marking so that seems to rule out someone's personal initials. The mystery continues........ Ron

Thanks for the confirmation, Ron. So I wasn't imagining things.
Have you lettered yours?

Absalom, No factory letter. Am almost certain that the CMC-CD marking is a post ww2 marking and most likely related to a Civil Defense entity. I have tracked down two U.S. counties that had Civil Defense organizations after WW2. One is Cape May County in N.J. and other is Charles Mix County in S.D. Not sure of either, just thinking out loud. Ron

It's been sort of discussed here in the past, but there has been no reason put forward as to why some CD organizations apparently had revolvers and when and where they got them. Does anyone know?

CMC - CD could be for Cheyenne Mountain Complex - Civil Defense

I entertained the idea of Cheyenne Mountain Complex as well, but since they became operational in the 1960's it seems to be too late for the use of surplus ww2 Victory models.....but, who knows? Ron

In terms of military surplus, it's only 15 years so quite possible that they moved some inventory there in the 60's......

Cheyenne Mountain did indeed house the National Civil Defense Warning Center starting in 1967. The only issue I would have with C.M.C. on this Victory referring to something as substantial as the Cheyenne Mountain Complex is that I have a hard time associating a large-scale federal operation, mostly military-controlled, with Bubba scratching its acronym into a gun with an electric pencil. (Although the TVA apparently did so in the 1930s.)
