K22 LERK
Got a few likes on this revolver when I posted a pic of it in it's original box. When I bought this revolver I didn't have a clue as to what a LERK was. I just bought it as it had a 4 digit serial number and the price was $825. I have learned a lot since then. Lettered, it was shipped on my 5th birthday in 1947, with a 1/10" patridge front sight. Nothing special. All numbers match including the box. It's a keeper. Big Larry

Extremely nice. If you can't have an actual birthday gun, an birthday anniversary gun is the next best thing. Congratulations!

It was shipped 9-23-1947. I was born that date in 1942. This is the revolver that got me into S&W's. I have about 30 now including the scarce K-32 from 1952. I collect Winchester levers and rimfires now, but cannot seem to part with any of my S&W's although I don't really collect them any longer. Thanks, Big Larry

As you probably know, ship dates can very... alot. A hundred or so earlier number, my K956 shipped March 47, and so did I.

LERK does stand for large extractor rod knob, however it has a little more specific meaning for total significance of the term. It refers to the use of the pre/during WW II 'barrel' style knobs on post war models and the post war guns with this variation, i.e., a LERK model or LERK K22.
The barrel style knob is not the largest knob, replacing the larger pre war 'mushroom' or 'acorn' knob by order dated 1/22/27 on all HE models with non-shrouded barrels.
There are earlier post war produced models w/o the LERK, just the post war straight rod, and LERKs typically show up sporadically in later, early post war production.
This is true for all models and all frame sizes. Factory use of the LERK is predicated and necessitated by the pre war barrels with a notch for them.
S&W would not scrap notched barrels in inventory just to change over to the straight post war knob; they exhausted the barrels in inventory by using LERKs. And as we well know, parts were not used in any particular order when assembling guns. So it's easy to understand post war assembly of un-notched barrels w/straight knobs being assembled first and/or mixed with notched barrels.
Therefore post war models with the LERK variation are said to have a LERK or be a LERK model. Pre war models with the barrel style knob are not referred to as having a LERK or being a LERK model; they all had it so it wasn't a variation.
