44 Special my Favorite Caliber
Picked this up this weekend, Probably paid too much but when you see it and Want it it doesn't matter Right? Serial # S146044 shipped in Feb 56, I thought for sure it would be a 55 gun but it just goes to show that you never know with S&W.
A little muzzle wear, cylinder ring and high edge wear on the Cylinder, The Bore is minty and the Magnas number to the gun. Its going to be a shooter for me and I cant wait to get to a range with it.
sorry for the bad pictures (cell Phone) I will try and do better after I get it cleaned up.
Dan

Hey! Now you've let the cat out of the bag about the marvels of the .44 Special. Let's not tell anybody else, OK?
Seriously nice six shooter.

Nice find don't see too many of these. To me the playing the musical chair game of these older guns changing hands from the older collectors to the new guys is slowing down.
When was the last new m24 manufactured? I purchased the last one my LGS had. It has the newer serial number with the loc but the label on the blue case is old. It's a 6 1/2" barrel in nickel.

Dan:
Very nice catch - the tapered barrel profile and all the beauty of the 357, with much bigger holes...
A range report is definitely in order.
Congrats,

I've got S146562, shipped in January, 1956. But then I've got S98534 which shipped in November, 1953.

I like the caliber too, and I like that implementation of it a lot. I foolishly let a Pre-24 slip away once several years ago, but I will probably remedy that oversight at some point.
Yes, a range report when available. Please!

The last five-screw Pre-24 probably shipped around 1956/57 with a serial number in the S147xxx range. The last major block of guns with any Model 24 designation were probably the Lou Horton 24-3s in the mid-1980s. The company was still selling a few 24-3s on their own at that time, but they all faded away pretty soon. The last ones had the seven-digit alphanumeric serial numbers still used today. There were some heritage series revolvers made later, but I kind of don't consider them regular issue guns.
As I watch myself write this, a question comes to mind: Were there any four screw Pre-24s? I don't think I have ever seen or heard of one, and I'm too lazy right now to go look for an answer.

I have S 140775 and S 143776 lettered 4/26/55 & 10/8/55 respectively. Your number sounds about right for 2/56. But note others have differing experiences.
BTW if anyone was born on either of these dates sorry but I am not interested in selling or trading any more of my guns.

I share the same admiration for the pre and post war .44 Specials (written while fondling S141148) Until the advent of the 44. Magnum ... they were "it". I still think they are terribly (good terribly) slick. You make the same size hole with a lot less nerve and joint trauma and a lot more control ... I target my .44 Magnums with .44 Special loads anyway (and so does Harry Callahan as he explains to the rookies in the range in Magnum Force) unless there's a testosterone challenge at the range, then we all start using the full .44 Magnum loads, just to show we STILL CAN !! Nice catch on that one. Save all those old .44s !!!
Gotta be careful for us old men. The older we get the faster we respond. In the event of a self-defense confrontation we know that "life" is not an extremely long time for us and a hell of a lot better than ending up on a slab in the morgue. ( It is far better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 ). Did I hear an AMEN to that ?

AMEN!!!!!!
It has been rumored that an old copper had said, on occassion, "Son, I'm too old to fight you, so I guess I'll have to kill you!"
A look at the old copper with the worn rubber grips on his vintage 1911 and a head full of grey hair and the bad guy went peacefully. So I've heard.

Why do you think it was done at the factory? Must have been done after WW II but do you know when exactly? Would they do this sort of work on an older gun?

Sax--
It has a re-work stamp under the grips "865"==August of 1965.
The Factory may have done this kind of work back then.
Dunno.

Dadgummit Gila Bender!
A blue 5" 3rd Model like your's is right at the top of my wish list. Been looking for years, but just can't seem to put one of those rarely seen guns and the money together at the same time.
Now ya done gone and made me feel bad.

I settled for a model 28 S serial prefix that had the cylinder bored to 44 Special, but left uncompleted. Obtained a 6-1/2" Target barrel and had it fit to the gun and refinished. Shoots great and looks great, too!! Don't hesitate to buy a well made custom, or make your own! Gary

I forgot how much fun .44 Special was, had gotten away from large caliber revolvers with exception to a 629 Mountain Revolver. Got bit by the .45ACP revolver thing with a Brazilian, then Pre-25 from a forum member that led into a Mod 25 modified to shoot bowling pins. Then the other day I stumbled on a Model 24-3 Lew Horton 3" round butt and its back into .44 Special and a new quest for one like the OP's...gotta love those Pre-Models.
Back to spending more time with revolvers, my muzzleloader buddies don't quite understand why I want to mess around with cartridge guns...its kind of like jazz, if you don't understand, don't ask.

The date stamp is intriguing but of course not proof positive they did the sights. May have been in for some other reason. Would be worth trying to access the service records if available.

Agree about service records, but there is no doubt in my mind that the company would put postwar sights on a prewar model if asked to. A very few prewar .38 M&P targets have surfaced with taller front sights and the new Masterpiece-style click-adjustable rear sight with the ribbed foot. I think of them as "Virtual Mexicans," as they resemble the almost never seen Model of 1946 M&P Target that was called the "Mexican" because that's where most of them were sold.
