.38 M&P Pre-Model 10
Picked this one up today. Came with the original box; no tools. s/n is C1552xx. 4 inch barrel, five screw, four liner with diamond magnas, blue.
Shiny bore, locks up tight. Good shooter and still has a nice finish.
Anxious to shoot.

It's a jig hole. Used to stabilize the gun during assembly. These gradually disappeared in the 1950s.
C1552xx should be from about 1950, maybe 1951.
Fun to find one with the box and accessories. Congrats!

I'll bet if you pull the stocks off your 1947 K-22 you will also find a jig hole in the grip frame.

Jack, thanks. I'll remind myself to look at the K22 next time I clean it. I did find a photo of the grip frame of my 1951 K-38 and it was there. Not there on the '81 or '83 Model 10's.
But it wasn't there in the 1948 M&P Postwar.
This is worse than remembering mods to aircraft.

Yes. I have examined literally hundreds of the postwar M&Ps over the past few years and have never seen one with a jig hole. Come to think of it, I've not seen a jig hole on any fixed sight revolver that I can recall (until now). I wonder if it was mainly a feature of the assembly process on target sight revolvers. I should ask Roy about this.
I do have a 1950 M&P very similar to yours. I'll get it out of the safe and see if it has a jig hole. Interesting . . .

By the way, I've got C101,xxx from March 1950... "fish hook" hammer and the same jig hole on the grip frame.
S 948,308... shipped 10/47 - no jig hole
S 999,839....shipped 07/48 - has a jig hole

Oh thanks a lot, Linda! Now I have another feature to track!!!
I guess I now have to drag every S prefix example out of my safe and see which of them has a jig hole. What do I do about the other 650 or so in my database? Track down their owners to ask one more question? (That's impossible in most cases, of course.)
BTW - is S948308 a round butt 2"? I have it in my spreadsheet, but the butt shape isn't recorded.
Thanks!

Here's two :
S 844707 from 10/46
S 961030 from 12/47
You have both in your data; neither has a jig hole.

This revolver also has the "lazy ampersand" on the barrel and the four line address.

I think there are only a few very low-digit C-prefix guns from 1948 that still have the one-line, so by the time of your gun a few years later, the four-line was well-established.

I meant the lazy ampersand in the four line address as opposed to the four line address.

images upload
This one also has the jig hole in the frame.
So if C101xxx shipped in March of 1950 and C155xxx shipped in May of 1950 this one (C113xxx) must have shipped in April 1950.
Back to the hole in the frame, this one also has the speed hammer and the hole.

Mike
The "High Speed" hammers are a defining characteristic of the early C prefix M&P revolvers. Nothing special there - but cool.
The jig holes lasted until well into the 1950s. I think I have a K target frame revolver that shipped in 1956 with the jig hole (I would have to dig it out of the safe to be sure). Again, cool.

Earlier in this thread we had a discussion on the jib holes in postwar and the early C prefixes. It was then I was informed about the notch under the spur indicating a speed hammer. I was pointing that out again in my last post. So my two 1950 (I'm guessing this latest one will be a '50) pre model 10s and my 1951 K-38 have the jig holes in the grip frame. I sense a trend.

So C113082 shipped in 9/50
and C155209 shipped in 5/50
Makes perfect sense to me.
