Default Victory Box Question

I was going through some boxes with no occupants and ran across one I've had for many moons but never noticed the writing on the bottom. Written in black on the manila colored bottom is V 815760 (see pic) with some extra writing below it including a note that Chrome Plating is $3.00. Made in United States of America stamped at the bottom. The box also has, on the green end label, a line through Round Butt and a Square Butt stamp below, so I figure it left the factory with a specific gun in it. My question is whether the serial number is righteous for this box and whether it is factory written.
I have/had several 5" guns with the S prefix that are 814xxx but haven't seen any in this range that are V only.
Any thoughts? I think if you click on the small pic that it will enlarge.
Ed

Some of our database keepers will hopefully join in. The usual caveat applies that with S&W nothing is impossible, especially around wartime, but 815760 seems much too high for a plain V prefix. It would be high for even an SV prefix, I think, as the straight S started below 815 as you say. I wonder whether the V is in error and this was the box for a pre-Victory; the label and 815 would work in that case. And was chrome a factory option at that time? Not to my knowledge.

There is a S815873 on my list. I don't have anything with a V prefix anywhere near that SN - the highest V-series on my list is V753727 which shipped in 1/45. It then jumps to SV762832.

I'm thinking everything written on the bottom of the box is after market scribbles by parties unknown. S&W never offered chrome plating as an option and the few factory chrome plated S&Ws were basically experimental. Ed.
