Default M&P 4th Change DOM info

Looking at an M&P 4th change, 6" barrel, black hard rubber grips, round butt. Seller thinks it was made in the 1920's Serial number is 5465XX.

SCSW 4th edition has a very broad range of serial numbers. Hopefully the experts can pin it down closer.

Later 1920s, maybe 1927. Does it have the mushroom- or barrel-shaped ejector knob?

5315xx shipped in February, 1926. It has the old style knob. So, this one likely has the old knob and could have shipped in 1926 or 1927. Of course ship dates can be way off from when a gun was assembled, so who knows? Without a letter, we can't.

What is interesting about this one is the round butt. Those are scarce in the 1920s decade. It would be nice to see a picture!

If the price is right, grab that one! You won't see another round butt from that era any time soon.

Jack,
It's kind of funny you should mention that model with a round butt being a bit hard to find. About 2 years ago I found the same model, in nickel, with a round butt, no address mark, and it came with a factory letter. That one was made in July 1921.

I'm going to grab this one if at all possible.

Dick

Here's 3 photos I managed to get of this revolver. Sorry for the poor quality.

It seems like in the first few years after WWI, round butts were still fairly common. So, one that letters to 1921 doesn't surprise me at all. By the mid-20s, that seems to have changed dramatically, with the square butt dominating production.

You are correct that the pics aren't too helpful. I cannot tell what the finish looks like, or if it is original. But you do show the extractor rod knob that we expected to see.

I hope you can pick this one up. When you get it home, you can post better photos.

Well, it arrived in the mail this afternoon. Not too much to look at, just a shooter grade but that is all I was looking for. Paid a little over $300 so I didn't get hurt any. Haven't had a chance to clean it up yet.

All numbers match, even the grips.

This one will keep my nickel 1921 M&P company. Both 6" barrels and both round butts.

Gee.........Goofed on the first photo,.can't believe I did that.
