Default Smith .38 terrier flat latch question

Looking at this little terrier for a while. Appears very nice and was told that it was from 1953. Would that be the correct cylinder release? Would it not have a flat latch?

Appreciate any help and apologize if this question has already been asked.

The latch is correct for that ".38/32 Terrier Improved I 2nd Version" (w/ramp sight and barrel rib instead of round sight). The standard latch that one has, is more common by far on the Improved I frame 2nd versions.

Although we occasionally see flat latches on the 2nd versions, they are the exceptions, only on late shipped guns, and the very beginning of the transition to flat latches.

The flat latches were not used exclusively until the Models of 1953 built on the New I frame.

If you haven't bought it yet, do so!! That looks like a beauty. That are getting scarce, and are great little guns. I have two, and would not part with either, and am actually keeping my eye open for other variations of the model.

Best Regards, Les

I haven't yet. What are these going for lately? I believe this one has the original factory box

Well, that is somewhat regional. Here in WV, I think with the factory box and in the condition that yours appears to be in (assuming it has not been refinished) it would go for from $450 - $550. Maybe more or less, and assuming also, that you are dealing with someone who knows what it is. The box, especially if the correct one, and mated to the gun, add considerable value.

That's just a ballpark figure.....

Best Regards, Les
