Ajax stag grips with insert ???

Bought a mod 29-2 on GB with a set of Stag grips. When it came in, the stags had a wooden insert or bottom fitted to them. Looks like the insert was pinned to the right grip originally, then glued on by a previous owner. The stags are target grip length with this insert. First i have ever seen. Anyone else ever see this? Why would you need a target length grip for a magna style grip?
the inside of right panel is marked AJAX GRIPS and 141 is written in red. I put these on the for sale forum last night.

Made to fit somebody's hands. A lot of folks find the Magnas to be too short top to bottom and don't like their pinky finger hanging off in space.
