New Pictures (Registered Magnum cyl. ?)
Took a chance and bought this not really knowing what it is for sure. Was listed as a Pre-27 NOS cylinder.
I thought the stamped # was to early for a Pre-27 ( and why does a NOS part have a stamped # ?).
The extractor star looks like a Registered Magnum ??
Thinking the time frame is around an un-registered magnum.
Any help appreciated, Thanks

Got this cylinder a couple days ago, took some new pictures
It's definitely a 357. Serial# is 55173. Looks new, the ejector star fits a little snug when fully seated, other than that don't see anything that stands out about it. (Pictures show some dried oil I haven't clean yet).
guess my questions are:
If a NOS why would it have a serial #
Does anyone know any info. for gun #55173
Does this have any value
Not sure why I purchased this Cylinder, guess its as close as I'll ever come to owning a Reg. Magnum

I can't make out the SN stamping very well, but if the first two digits are 55, and there are 5 digits, it is in the RM range. What is the stamped number?

After manipulating the almost illegible image I make the number to be 55x7x, which would indicate 1937 production within the RM range.
I don't have any RM to compare, but the attachment of the extractor star to its shaft looks odd to me. A factory repair?

What's the exact serial number? A cylinder in the 55K range has two model choices - RM, or Heavy Duty ( assuming it's a S&W cylinder ) I have no non-reg RMs in my data base in the 55K # range . Ed.

Don't have it in my hands yet, but think the number is 55173 or 55178

NOS wouldnt make sense since a number is stamped on the cylinder.
Are the chambers .38 spl or .357 mag?
... just realized you dont have it in your hands yet

Recessed chambers would make it a magnum cylinder (unless someone went back and cut it)

It does have the black powder type scallops on the flutes. Early Pre-27's might have it a little but not that pronounced.

Yes, in my earlier reply, I was going to ask if it was chambered in .357 until I saw the recesses. It hadn't occurred to me that someone may have added recesses later, but that wouldn't make much sense to do as it would have created greatly increased headspace had it been a .38/44 cylinder.

Now THERE'S a man who thinks it ALL the way through!!---a bit more than I did first time around.

They were given the numbers when they were fitted to a gun. That part looks unused. I am not entirely sure what to make of it.
I suppose the value might come from someone needing a replacement for their RM?

Well, this is interesting. This cylinder is the consecutive SN to one of my RMs. Wouldn't mind owning that cylinder

My RM shipped to Warshalls sporting Goods in Seattle and was accompanied by an identical 357 bearing REG # 3345, I will have to look at my records to see if the serial number was also consecutive.

Hopefully everyone who owns other parts of 55173 comes forward
