Smile WOW - Beautiful S&W Wood from the Early 1960's

When you have collected S&Ws for any period of time longer than 3-4 months, if you're honest, you will also find yourself becoming a wood collector. You'll find yourself purchasing guns, just to get the grips and you'll purchase grips even if you don't have a gun for them to go on - "just in case you find that perfect S&W that needs some grips..." These are just such grips. I believe that I purchased them several years ago from the classifieds on the Forum. They were very nice, but had been refinished once or twice before and had a few bumps and bruises in the finish. So, this last weekend I refinished this set of 1960's presentation stocks and after 4-5 coats of Tung Oil, I have to say - There is some Beautiful Wood!!!

I'd love to see your nicest S&W wood from the 1960's...

I know what you mean, a nice pair of grips can "make" a gun! I have found that if I can't find original S&W grips (which would be best), I will buy aftermarket grips with nice wood too.

IIRC, S&W had used Walnut then went to the Goncalo Alves wood. Beautiful specimens, Gentlemen!

That has to be one of my all time favorite photos on the forum!!! Not only the guns/wood, but the artistic composition of light, shadow and background is great! I love it every time you share it. Thanks,

HAHAHAHA!!! Are you sure Paul? That set is a pretty hard act to follow. I have ever seen a set with such consistent grain patterns side-to-side as that pair. I should post a pic of the butt and front/back. They are matching. My BEST gun show buy EVER.

Here's a set of factory rosewood presentation grips on a 1955 Class A two-tone 3 1/2" pre-27. They're my favorites. The grain is like runny molasses.

Kris I'm always sure..... just not always right.

I believe he has an early N frame set with wood similar to this.

I guess they still had a little good stuff left when they were made

I also have these ones that I keep on my favorite shooter (a well used 8.375" Pre-27)...

Sandblast it, every time you post that I can't help but be annoyed that I didn't bid harder against you on that one. That's one of mine that got away, I love that gun.

S&W Smooth Presentation Grips and S&W Combat grips were always my favorites.

Here's a Model 18-4 with my last set of S&W Presentation Grips.

I know these don't count, but they are John Culinas modern day version.
They are so pretty, I almost hate to touch them with my grubby old hands.
Almost.

The grip screw isnt tight and they aren't pulled all the way together at
the bottom. But you get the general idea.

These are just such grips.

Hi, beautiful examples. How do you keep the tung oil off the medallions?

Wood is beautiful, but Hogue monogrips ae comfortable to shoot --- and don't get scratched. Most of my wood grips are safely sitting in a drawer.

With the Tung Oil, I apply it generously on all the grip, including the medallions and let sit for 5 minutes, then (like the directions say) I buff with "clean lint free cloth" and I buff especially hard on the medallions. During the 5 minute set period the Tung Oil sinks into the wood, but not the medallions and it wipes off easily...

Thanks. I used Birchwood Caseys. Can't touch it until it dries or anything will stick to it.

Think my favorite S&W stocks are the orangeish diamond GA's made in the 1965 to 1967 time period,
Pictured below is a 27-2 (top) and a 19-2 both shipped in mid 1966 and have 3T's , "Proud" FS pins and yellow FS inserts.

That blued 19-2 with proud pins is just plain cool Brad. Very nice.
Did you have it lettered?
