Default Identify S&W Hand Ejector revolver

I want to identify my new S&W revolver. The Model number on the frame under the yoke is 745. It is in S&W 38 Special caliber. The serial number is 2857xx. The barrel is 4". I notice it has a screw in front of the trigger guard, and the four studs in the frame are screwed in from the inside. It is nickel plated.

How about a picture, the only model 745 I can find in the S&W Standard Catalog is a semi-automatic. Also, how many screws are in the side plate? Also, if it's an early revolver, I don't believe the model number would be stamped on the frame under the yoke.

I suspect that this is an M&P from the 19_teens, assuming there is no letter in front of the serial number. The 745 is likely an assembly number. Welcome to the forum!

Without a prefix, I suspect jmace is correct, and it would be from around 1915/16. Does it look like the one pictured below? It's a .32 WCF, but based on your description should be of identical appearance.

No models were assigned until 1957. Your gun is much older.

Probably a Military & Police, which was designated Model 10 in 1957. Some minor changes occurred along the way.

Thanks for the replies. There are 4 screws holding the side plate. There is no S&W logo on the side plate. The nickel plating is very poor and I plan to chemically remove it and blue the gun unless this is a rare and valuable piece.

Welcome to the forum.

The problem with rarity is that sometimes it has nothing to do with the model of the gun. If in fact your gun is a M&P of which S&W made over 7,000,000 it is not really rare model wise. If however, your gun shipped to J. Edgar Hoover, it could be worth plenty.

Soooooo, unless you letter a gun, no one can really know for sure.

Default S&W Hand Ejector

Thanks for all the info. I believe this is a M&P made in the teens. I will let you know how the nickle strip and blueing goes.

For an M&P, your SN 2857xx would indicate shipment sometime in the WWI period. I list SN 2847xx as shipping in 6/1918. The lack of the S&W logo stamp also verifies it is from the WWI period. S&W ceased using the frame logo stamp during that time, resuming use shortly after the war, sometime in 1919-20.
