Default S&W .38 special 6 shot 2" barrel "C 107xxx" on the squate butt

Hello I have a smith and wesson 6 shot 38 special, 2 inch barrel, square butt, wood grips, diamond on the handle, on the butt and yolk it has " C 107767". On the inside of the grip is "374353" and when u swing out the yolk, where its jointed to the gun it has "14472" and also found "X5" in the same area. Could someone please give me any info? I've searched high and low and can't pinpoint exactly what model or year its from. Thanks.

Welcome! It is a .38 Military & Police (later called the model 10) from about 1950. It would be unusual to see the serial number (C 107767) on the yoke in a gun of this era. You may see the number on the inside of the right stock panel also. Hope this is helpful.

As Alan said, the numbers in the yoke are usually not related to the serial; they actually don't tell us anything meaningfull. The serial was on the side of the yoke arm, only visible through a chamber, up to a point in time I'm not sure of. The butt number in your third photo is the important serial number. If the number on the "inside of the grip", as you put it, is on the right side wood part, that would mean the grips belonged to another gun originally, since that should match the butt serial.

Your gun most likely shipped May 1950.

Here's another one, a good deal more worn than yours. SN C 137012. I've shot it in the Internet Snubby Matches. Does mine have the correct grips?

You have to remove the right grip and check the number to see if it matches.

Also on a side note, is this a J or K frame?

It's a K frame gun. Nice pre model 10.
The J frame revolvers have a 5 shot cylinder.

These snubs must have been incredibly popular in the early 1950's. This year I've picked up two (1951-1952) and just saw one out for sale today at the LGS. Maybe it just rains these things in Georgia. I never see any other Smiths from the early 1950's out for sale around here.
