Default K-22 Bonded Ivory, before & after

Bought a set of Boned Ivory grips a couple of years ago and have tried several different methops of aging them. Tried the UTI meds, guess I chicken out early looked like they were going to be way TOOOOOO orange. Just finished soaking them in a super strong loose leaf tea bath for 4 days. They did darken some, just so that the diamond stands out. In the pix they still look white. First pix is the before, second after the tea and the third is the Walnut stocks it came with numbered to the piece. Plastics went back in the pile to try something different later. Love K frames.

Default K-22

Yea, the originals are staying on. It was the only K frame picture I had with the bondeds on before I started trying to age them. Thanks one the one liner comment.

Nice K22 with either stocks.
For me, a less than amateur photographer, getting good pictures of ivory stocks is hard.

I put a set on a Model 30 no dash in nickel. I think they look good on a nickel handgun but not as good on blued. The main reason I got it was the vast improvement of the grip in my hand.

Default Bondefc Ivory

After some thought I dug the Bonded Ivory (plastic) grips back out and tried the uti meds AZO again, and no you don't run it through your bladder first. 1st pix is a before, 2nd was soaked in tea, and the 3rd is using AZO. Walnuts are back on.

Wow, what a difference. I have some polymer Ajax ivory simulators, I've been hesitant to experiment even with them, seeing as how they've been out of print for years.

Sorry to say it, but the post-UTI versions just don't look right to my eyes. Thanks for doing the testing, though!

My brother in law let a pair soak in very strong coffee in the hot sun for two days with good results. They were not as brown as you would think.

Actually I take this back ,thinking of it now it was tea he used.

OK, I'm kinda dumb and just have to guess the azo you're talking about is azogantrsin for bladder infections. I'd look if you did run them through the bladder. I just don't want to be handling them afterwards. Any way you do it, the K22 looks good, as all of them do.

Default AZO

Yes it is a med for urinary tract infection. A while back another member of this forum suggested trying this method to age " Boned Ivory", if anyone decides to try this. YOU MUST follow his Golden rule of NOT doing this in your wife's kitchen and you must wear rubber gloves. The AZO when crushed and desolved dyes everything it touches. Golden rule

Just thought I'd add my experience with the Ajax stocks in case anybody was interested.

This thread convinced me to go ahead and give the aging process a try, using ten tea bags in about two cups of water. I was worried that any contact between the bags and the stocks might leave a dark spot, so I let the tea steep for 10 hours, then removed the bags and stirred in the stocks.

Note on steeping: I have a gas stove, usually leave it on warm to keep some heat in the apartment. The burner that has the vent under it therefore is kept very warm, and that's where I left the small pan with the tea.

Let the stocks set for about twelve hours; not one bit of difference in shade.
Then I made a pitcher of iced tea.

I remember back in the old days this method was used on Catalin stocks, but it seems more modern polymers are just too tough. I don't think I'm going to try anything else on the Ajax stocks, it doesn't show well in pics but they do have a wee bit of yellow softening to the tint that warms them up from bright white.

Or do you guys think that you have to let them set for days in order to have any effect?
