Default What was thinking behind the 38/44

Seems like the 38/44 is bigger than it needs to be for a 38 Special

What was the thinking when it was introduced?

Cops needed a "magnum" to shoot through car bodies........ so the short answer was to soup up the .38 special ( lots of extra space in the case from it's black powder days)..... and fire it from an N-frame.......

Total redesign in 34/35 got us the ".357 magnum" still an N-frame only round till 1954/55.

On the 1911 auto side we got the ".38 Super"

357 magnum was introduced in 1934. The 38/44 was introduced in 1930. It was made to handle hot 38spl loads which the typical K frame of the time couldn't, or at least not constantly. N frames were the only ones that could handle the pressures
