32 HE is finally home
After the required 10 day wait, the new to me HE is home and cleaned up. 1938 to 1941 from what I can tell, serial 5142xx 6" Nickeled all matching including the black rubber grips. Assembly numbers all matching as well. Nickle is in to me very good condition with a couple of spots (muzzle and top of front sight) missing. Some staining on the side plate from sitting in a leather holster for years. Action was dry with no oil and dried up grease. I replaced the rebound spring and now it is what a S&W SA/DA should be. Took it to the range yesterday and was surprised at its accuracy, no issues holding 3" at 15 yards (about what I can do with fixed sights..) I bought the pistol for $400 and a set of period correct hard rubber target grips from ebay for $175. Things in Ca are more expensive, but am wondering if folks think it is worth what I have in it. I haven't seen to many 6" Nickeled ones around in this good of condition.

I would love target sights, but can't see how I could do that without hurting it's value. I am attaching a picture of the rebound spring I took out of it, does not look factory to me, but then what do I know this is my first HE.. I replaced it with a spring from a Wolff kit for a J frame, worked fine. Also a picture of the Nickle damage at he muzzle and front sight. Must have been dropped at some time.

The spring looks original but the bottom end is likely cut; it doesn't match the top end.

Would this pistol be considered a "long action"? My wife shoot it as well and commented that the hammer pull for single action was much longer than her newer Model 60. I never even noticed.. Overall quite happy with this one. Now to find a K22 to match my K38. These things are addicting LOL.

The I frames (your .32) and the J frames (her M60) did not undergo a long to short action change as did K and N frames. They're all the same length action from 1896 thru the present.
However, the pre war hammer style and leaf mainspring of the pre war thru 1951 pre Improved I frame do make the actions feel different (a little more difficult cocking) from the Model of 1953 New I frame and M60 with their improved hammer spur and coil mainspring.
