Default Victory .38 special

Merry Christmas to me! Good friend gave me this Victory model .38 special. It had belonged to his father and he has no "responsible" or interested kids to leave it to, so he gave it to me. The serial number is V1203XX and it has the flaming bomb emblem on the opposite end from the serial number. The cylinder and the left grip also have the same serial number. It has no other military markings. It does show holster wear and appears to be original, finish. It has a slight brown patina. It shoots very well.
Would like some info on when it was made and what ammo was used in WWII, (158gr. 130gr.??)
I do plan to get a letter from S&W, but I understand that takes lots of time.
What say the experts?

That particular time period in later 1942 saw a lot of non-topstrap marked guns go to DSC destinations and the Maritime Commission, and one comes across quite a few in apparently little used or unissued condition like yours.

Getting a letter from the S&W Historical Foundation (S&W no longer handles these) will set you back $75, but the turn-around on my last one on a Pre-Victory this month was only about two weeks. On unmarked ones, it can be worthwhile, since these did usually ship directly to the end user, reflected in the letter, unlike the military marked guns.
