Default .38 S&W Special CTG

Hello dear friends,

My father has as revolver, which was bought by his grandfather and it is been passing on our family ever since. Today, we started wondering when it was made. I will provide some information below, hoping that you guys can help me.

1) Type:
Hand Ejector

2) Serial Number:
17XXXX

3) CTG or CALIBER:
.38 S&W Special CTG

4) Barrel Length:
6 inches

5) Sights
Hand Ejector Fixed

6) Additional information:
Another thing that may be important, is the fact that ".38 S&W Special CTG" is written in the left side of the gun, not in the right like some other S&W apparently (I may be wrong).

Welcome to the Forum.

You have a .38 Military & Police from the 19 teens. It is NOT made of stainless steel. Rather, it is plated with either nickel or chrome.

It is a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905. I suspect it dates from about 1912 or 1913. Others here may be able to nail that down.

That appears to be the 6" barrel, not the 5". And the finish is nickel over carbon steel. S&W did not make a stainless steel revolver until 1965.

A very nice family heirloom!

Yeah that was a mistake, I should've said chrome-plated, not stainless steel... and yes, that's a 6 inches barrel.

Thank you very much!
