Pre-model 24 has a new friend
Whenever I took out my .44 Special model 1950 target (Pre-24), it told me it was lonely. Now, thanks to Kris (410 Bore), it has a companion. The lower gun is a .45 ACP model 1950 target (Pre-26). I think they look good together.
SCSW indicates that the .44 came with a Baughman front sight, so either they did come with either a Baughman or Patridge or mine was a special order (not lettered). If the .44 normally came with a Baughman and the .45 with a Patridge, is that because the .45 was considered more of a target gun, being used in the 3 gun (.22, CF, .45) matches?

The 6 1/2" 1950 .44 normally came with a Patridge front sight. The 4" and 5" versions came with the Baughman ramp front sight.

That is what I would have expected. SCSW says that the Baughman was standard in all barrel lengths. The 6.5" example shown has a red ramp. Rick and Jim are outstanding, but like most of us, not perfect.

Bob,
That's a great pair that you have.
You're correct. The 6 1/2" shown on page 161 of the SCSW-3 and page 189 of the SCSW-4 is a special order version; besides the red ramp sight it also has the target hammer and target stocks which were not standard on the Model of 1950 Target (Pre Model 24) or the Model 24.

As previously stated, the regular blue 6 1/2" guns usually were shipped with a plain Patridge front sight. However, the bright blue guns frequently had other special order sights. I sold my collection of 1950 Targets over the past couple of years and no longer own any of the guns shown below.
6 1/2" Bright Blue with Red Ramp Front Sight
6 1/2" Bright Blue with Red Post Front Sight
6 1/2" Bright Blue with McGivern Gold Bead Front Sight - very rare - lettered
5" Bright Blue - Model 24 - with Red Post Front Sight

Gorgeous, especially the rare early Cokes on this one!

By far, the rarest in my old collection was the 5 in 4-screw M24 with red post. It lettered as shipping to the Texas Gun Clinic. I figured it would be H.H. Harris or Rex.

Good buy!
This 44 Special model 1950 target was the first high quality "collectible" Smith and Wesson I purchased. Still a favorite.
