38 Smith & Wesson 4 inch 5 screw revolver identification
Hello everyone! I just inherited a beautiful revolver from my grandfather and would like help identifying it. It is a 38 s&w 4 inch barrel hand ejector type revolver. The chamber holds 5 rounds, and it is 5 screw. The front grip strap has the number 6589 on it. Behind the yolk is the number 694, though I think that's probably just a parts identification number because it's also present on the yoke itself. There's no lanyard hook on the butt of the gun.

I believe that is a 38 Regulation Police.

Yoy have a S&W Regulation Police (RP) model in .38 S&W caliber (not .38 S&W Special). The serial number 6589 indicates a probable 1918 shipment. The closest SN on my list is 659x, shipping in 4/18. I do not believe this one left the factory with that front sight and barrel rib. The barrel may have been replaced with one from the post-WWII period (production continued into the late 1960s). Can you see a SN on the bottom of the barrel?

It appears to have had a barrel change. The extractor rod is also incorrect for a gun from the "teens." Something isn't right here.

Yes, that extractor rod knob indicates that it is likely from the 1928-48 period. I didn't notice that at first, just the barrel rib and front sight. The grips are apparently original, at least of the period-correct style. None of that affects its usefulness in any way, but it does put that RP into the "Shooter" category rather than being "Collectible."

The barrel looks a little longer than 4" too, doesn't it? Nice looking piece though.
