Need help on .38 Chief's Special
Trying to identify info on and also gauge value of a S&W .38
I would like to purchase from a friend which is why i am trying to figure out approximate value.
- Serial # 542969
- Mod 36 but with a strange sideways H stamp (see in pic)
- Also has number 21236 on yoke
Thanks, JR

Those numbers on the yoke were for the assembly of the firearm. Serial number range on the early J frames was from 1 - 786544. (1950 - 1969). I would estimate you have a ''66 or '67. Call S&W customer service and they will nail it down for you.
Someone will come along with a better idea I am sure.
I don't like those dull areas behind the cylinder on the sideplate and where the barrel meets the frame; maybe just dust and a bad wipe down.
I paid $425 for my Chiefs Special back in 2015 and am quite happy with it.
It is a 1972

First of all, welcome to the forum!
Something I've never seen on a S&W revolver is the Smith & Wesson roll mark on left side of the barrel is lower than center.
The markings on the yoke are simply fitter's marks and are meaningless.
In the condition shown I'd say value likely about $300. But that's just my opinion.
What is your friend asking for it?

The stocks have no diamonds around the screw. If original to that gun, that means it dates after 1966, or in that year.

I thought the same thing--it looks like almost like some sort of corrosion from something spilled on the gun? Surely it's just the picture.

Not real close to yours, but I have listed SN 5949xx as shipping in 2/68. I'd guess yours shipped sometime in 1967. You should look on GunBroker to see what similar ones have actually sold for recently. A year or so, I went in detail through the sold items there for Model 36s, and found very few which had sold for over $375. I'd almost agree with the earlier $300 estimate.
