Default Let's talk front sights on the N Frame 357 Magnum

My 1952 357 Magnum has a front serrated ramp sight which gives me excellent results:

Is the serrated ramp generally considered superior to the earlier half moons, square blades, etc.

What is the current state of the art?

I'm happy with black rear sights and black front sights.

The shape of the front sight makes little difference to me.

Wide rear sight is more important.

I like a Patridge front sight over anything.

Seems to be a manner of personal preference and what the factory installed. When the front sight blade is part of the barrel, as opposed to being pinned in place, it takes some effort and expense to change them. I have added colored inserts on ramped blades but have never felt moved enough to change blades.

The Baughman ramp is much better for a holster gun. The Patridge eats up the inside of a holster quickly. The half moon can glare in bright light.

A fairly common front sight these days is a round piece of light gathering plastic. It's kinda tube shaped. Go to the S&W factory site to see one.

It's personal preference assuming whatever sight it is stays on the gun. With a 27/28-type gun with an integral sight, that usually isn't an issue.

a brass bead on the front of patridge blade is a neat looking set up, folks that have them seem to like them.

I just had a Gold bead front sight installed on my Model 22 Thunder Ranch and it is a great improvement over the stock sight

The Patridge blade was a major improvement over the semi-circular for target shooting, but personally I find no practical difference between it and the ramp front. The latter tended to show up on shorter barreled ("holster") guns and the Patridge on longer ones.

Here is a Bubba "improvement" on a Patridge sight, mounted on a postwar .357 Magnum. The gun is otherwise original, including the stocks. According to Roy's letter, it shipped on May 21, 1952, to the George Lawrence Company, Portland, Oregon.

Several years ago, I sold this revolver to a man who was born on May 21, 1952. He got an actual "birthday gun."
