If you're happy and the seller is happy, you're even . . .

Kinda funny, I am a gentile. I think you meant gentle. Don't you love spell check?

If it is a model 17 no dash like you listed, about $300 IMHO.

If you're happy, don't worry about it. Over the years, we ALL have paid a premium for something we wanted AND knew it was not worth as much as we paid.
Just smile and go on with your life!

This mint in box from 1960 went for $1,401 on Gunbroker on October 30, 2016:

This pre-17 went for $616 on December 24, 2016:

I'm no expert, but I think you paid double.

If the seller accepts no question returns you might want to consider your options

Exc condition without box and papers. Depending what special variations or none it could be worth as low $750 or as high around $1100. This according to 4th edition. If it is a nickel finish it could be worth much more or possibly not because again it makes a difference which gun it is.
Aren't you glad you asked? I know..........shut up.

Myself I feel the 4th edition gun values are low according to what I see some guns selling for. But I am no expert on gun values either.

Like Muss said it is worth what you paid for it if you are satisfied with it.

Default Sparking Joy

If pride of ownership sparks joy, what difference does what you paid have to do with your happiness. Money comes and goes, Smithies remain.

In ten years you'll be talking about the bargain you got... its all relative.
I look at sold listings of like items on GB & AA, then i look at the backpage listings and then various forums (search for sold items too). After all that I might look at a local gunshow. From all that data I can get an idea what my widget is worth based on condition, sales and market conditions.

You paid more than I would have, but then again, I am not that fond of model 17's and it was your money, making my opinion worth a lot less than 2 cents.
Enjoy it and dont worry about how much you paid for it. Too many put too much emphasis on bargains.
It is a hell of a deal if it is what you want and you get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

I see so many opinions of value here, and reports of purchases, that seem so low, that I question my own sanity concerning the guns I've paid for. If I see something I like, and have a few extra bucks, I probably end up paying too much almost every time.
I never can seem to see anything quite as nice, or as low priced, as the people here can find. If you like it, and will take pleasure in ownership, then you paid just the right amount. What opinions others have should not be relevant to the value you will receive every time you use it.
Enjoy!

I have to agree with some of the others. Used, model marked, no box
or papers. I'd say you overpaid $400-$500.

Its done and over with. Go enjoy your gun. In future years you will have spend more money in ammo and had enough fun and enjoyment that it will seem cheap. I paid around $200 for my model 18 years ago. Lots of rounds and miles on it and it is worth way more than I paid for it. Some day yours will have many happy memories attached to it and be worth more than you paid for it. Just a matter of time.

You only overpaid if you do did not get what you thought you were buying. If you got what you wanted, then you made a good buy.
I want a model 18 but not enough to pay the going price so I settled for a 34-1 in the box that is a dream to shoot. I no longer fret about an 18.

Anyone who stated that you overpaid just doesn't understand the REAL value of money.

If we all gave a rip what other folks cared what we paid for our guns, none of us would sleep at night As Muss Muggins posted, if you and the seller are pleased, what else matters. Enjoy your nice Model 17

That would make you about 50 years old....... you'll be shooting that 17 for at least the next 20 years...... So you're renting it at $61.25 a year. Or the price of a Starbuck's coffee in 2037

When you pass it on to a son or daughter....... that 17 will be good to go for another 30-40 years or so........ bringing the annual cost down to $20.41/year. Wonder what $20 will buy your son in 2077??

I think its cool to hear others ideas on this topic. Yap @ almost 50 yrs old ive come to understand many things about myself.....which I will share one with you now. I cant choose a worthy marriage minded woman to save my life (they R out their i just dont attract them) so in not wanting to set a poor example for my daughter i gave it up and the money i saved well I can buy more then 1 over priced gun + 10 yrs from now the gun wont leave me & take 1/2 of my pension with it.....LOL

I eventually get over paying too much for something.
I rarely get over buying something that wasn't exactly what I wanted.

IMO it's ok to pay a bit too much for something as long as you do so knowingly.
I only get mad at myself when I overpaid then found out later that I was not knowledgeable about what I was buying.

I wanted a Ruger MK IV as soon as they were available. I know I paid market price for that privilege. A few months later you can easily find them for $50-$75 less than I paid, and I am ok with that.

I really like " fine things" good single malt scotch , bird dogs , gold/silver bullion & guns too! I enjoy touching ,wiping down , and yes shooting really nice well made guns...like a curvy dark haired girl wearing a low cut dress , somethings you just cant put a price on.

If you like the gun, enjoy it. I'm sure i've overpaid for guns, but I've wasted far more money on things like Harley Davidsons and my "toy" car. Those things will only depreciate in value (I finally sold my last Harley and took a beating on it, but I enjoyed it while I had it).

Model 17s are desirable guns. You picked a nice one. When do you get it?

If your happy with your new gun that is all that is important.

As far as money, they print lots of it every day, its your duty to use it!

PS-- nice gun!

If you are happy with it and wanted it for yourself to use and pass on to heirs, then you did fine. If you bought it as an investment you probably overpaid a good deal, $300+

That said, I tell people all the time who want to buy rare guns or parts from me: "You can get money anywhere; money is not hard to find. But where are you going to find another one of these?"

As they say they ain't making them (or at least not like that) anymore. I usually overpay for something in that category if I want it bad enough and have the funds. I hope you bought it to enjoy.

I've gotten quite a few really good deals over the years, but probably more often, done just that. Money is relative... my kids have never gone hungry and I've never missed a bill because I spent the mortgage on a gun. However, there may have been a time (or two) that the wife may have had to wait a couple of pay days for that new coach purse or some other bauble that she had to have

Remember this, if you had not bought that gun, you would be spending time and money looking for another one. How much is your time worth? Plus you can enjoy shooting it NOW! As they say you can always make more money!

Actually jd67, you can put a price on that curvy dark haired
girl wearing a low cut dress here in Las Vegas, NV!

Enjoy your new S&W revolver and pass it on to a family
member.

I have always figured that the price of something is what the other person will pay for it. You may not do good or bad but you paid the price you wanted to get and that's what its worth. Now enjoy it in your collection and keep it in the family.

Default Paid too much?

After beating myself up over 25 or 50 bucks and losing hand guns I really wanting but thought they were priced too high. I decided if it made me happy to pick up what I wanted when they were available it was worth it. You can't put a dollar valve you on everything. As long as your not depriving your family of their needs, put a smile on your face and start looking for you next one.
Happy hunting jackcpat

Most of the time if you buy on gunbroker you will overpay especially if the starting bid is already at it's max value.

I like the auctions that have no reserve and start at $0.01

Send it back if you feel cheated or have buyers remorse if it's offered.

Buy the book before you buy the .... is always
good advice.
These run around 6-700 around here with no box
in excellent shooter grade.

But i say you simply bought too early !! You didn't over pay !!
