Default 2nd Model .44 H.E. Nicest I have ever seen.

I picked up this beauty in Tulsa a few years ago. I know they don't have the following that the 1st and 3rd's have but this is one beautiful gun. Not a single mark on it.

Default Where's my sunglasses?

Those grips are almost too brilliant to look at without eye protection. Congratulations on your exceptional gun!

Very nice! I have two 2nd Model shooters, I love these old .44's. They are great fun on the range and out in the field!

Yep, that's pretty impressive! Thanks for sharing.

Have you checked the serial to see when made/shipped?

If the stocks are original, I'm guessing that silver medallions on Magnas means 1930's, maybe even to 1940?

Great find. That's why I love the Tulsa show. I'm guessing the ship date is between '36 and '40? I have and earlier 2nd model witht he post WWI flat finish, lanyard ring, and non medallion stocks. I agree that the 2nd model is greatly under appreciated but that keeps the price a little lower for those of us that like them. Good show, Jim.

Wow, that's a nice .44HE 2nd Model, certainly the nicest I've seen, and with Magna stocks to boot! The .44 2nd Model has grown on me over the years. I appreciate the efficient design that has nothing more than what is needed to deliver a big .44 LRN on target.

Just for grins I weighed a few of my shooters, check it out. The .44HE 2nd 5" is significantly lighter than modern steel N-frames.

44HE 2nd 5" .44 SPL 37.25 ounces
624 4" .44 SPL 40.00 ounces
629-2 MTN 4" .44 Mag 40.50 ounces

That is by far the nicest that I have ever seen in a 2nd Model...The stocks are just stunning as well.

Wow! Three things immediately struck me when I saw your gun. The stunning magna's (do they number to the gun?), the size of the ejector rod knob (nice variation from the usual mushroom) and last, the obvious excellent condition.
Have you lettered that rascal yet?

Thanks for sharing!

That gun is spectacular! I have to agree the second models are elegant. I got mine from SDH @ the symposium in Spokane a couple years back, 1926 vintage. Lucky to have it.

That appears to me to be a brand new gun. When did S&W start making the 2nd Model again?

It 's five inches, and you need to train your eyes to easily distinguish between it and the .45 M-1917, which has a 5.5 inch barrel.

I don't think it was made in six-inch form. It was 6.5 inches. Look at Bracebeemer's Target Model above. That's what 6.5 inches looks like. His holster is a Berns-Martin.

This is a 5 inch gun that shipped very late. It shipped in January 1940.

Here's my 2nd model. It's been on the forum before. Not as nice as some of these, and someone messed up and put fat stocks on it.

Here is one I just picked up at a gun show. GREAT FIND!

I was told by the seller that he remembered seeing it on a shelf in a collection when he was just a kid. Some 50 years later ( last month) he acquired it and put it in my hands.

This gun is flawless! All numbers match including the penciled numbers on the right grip.

I would rate this gun at 99% and better - like new - not a mark on it.

It was built on a 1917 frame as indicated by the eagles head inside the yoke.

It is factory lettered and was shipped in 1923

I paid "BIG BUCKS" for it but believe it is worth even more than I paid. You rarely find these in this condition for sale any more.

I bought it with my wifes money cause I'm broke - just don't tell her or I'll be homeless too

I had one once that was just as nice, but the stocks were not as bright. In the late 1960's I was stationed in NJ and was offered some guns from a deceased collector. All I had was a typewritten list with prices. I picked 3 S&W's off the list: a 1917 Army for $50, a nickle plated .32-20 with jigged bone grips for $60, and a second model .44 HE in .44-40 with 5 or 5.5" barrel for $65. Upon close examination the .44 HE did not appear to have ever been fired, and I never fired it in the year or so that I owned it. I traded it off for a M28 after I came back from VN in 1970. I was a lot dumber and younger then than I am now, but at least I didn't lose money on it. The only 2nd Model .44 HE that I have now is a Target model that is pretty nice, but not as nice as the one in the OP or as the one I had earlier.

...I may be strange...but I like the clean look of an unshrouded...unribbed...tapered barrel...especially with target sights...guess that's why I invested in my 1905 target...
