Default A little info needed on 5" 5 screw

Picked this up today so need some info please.
1) Proper model number/name?
2) Approx ship date serial 608242?
3) What would the proper stocks be? Was wearing a set of Uncle Mikes when purchased.
4) Approx. value..shows minimal holster wear at end of barrel. no box etc.

.38 S&W Special.

Definitely the oldest Smith I own.

Thanks in advance for any and all information.

It's properly called a "Military and Police" (M&P) Model (K-frame). 608242 would date its shipment to probably be in the 1928-31 period as shipping dates did not track too closely with serial numbers during this period. It's most likely that the correct grips (from the 1920s) would be checkered wood with convex round top, no S&W medallions. Look on eBay - you may find some, they probably won't be cheap. The slightly later version but with silver medallions were used throughout the 1930s and those are on the scarce side. A nice pair might be a little more expensive as they are somewhat less common. Magna grips would not be period-correct, but would fit, and would be much less expensive. Otherwise, the gun's condition looks pretty good. I'd say that without original grips, you might find one close to it at a gun show priced about $300-$350. The lack of original grips does hurt the value significantly, especially one in fairly high condition.

Beautiful M&P. Just guessing here but the serial number places it between 1915 and 1942. About 3/4 of million were made.

Stocks would have been hard rubber or walnut with a diamond in the center and a gold medallion.

There is a note about the .38 M&P Model of 1905 - 4th change, which is what I think you have, that says a nickel version was made for the Texas State Prison. They were made between 1927 and 1930 with s/n between 500,000 and 630,000. That might help tighten down when yours was made.

Thanks for the info.

Can someone post a photo of the proper stocks that would be original to this vintage?

free picture upload

this is pre WWII (not mine) so the walnut stocks would be close to this. Amazon has a free Standard Catalog Smith & Wesson 3rd edition if you get the kindle version. That has a breakout of the Smith stocks in the front.

Try a posting WTB ad in the classified section of this forum. That is where I found the solution for a model of 1902 which I bought with replacement grips a while back.

You have a very nice M&P. Best of luck on the grips.

One of our fine forum members reached out to me and I believe he has a set that will work just fine. I'll update post once they arrive.

I think I have an old photo of the 1920's and 1930's grips that would fit that gun. There it is. Refinished by one of the best in the profession. He collected grips more than he collected guns. I sure won't ever touch these because they can't be improved upon. Got them on EBAY from the widow of the best friend of the man who refinished them. . .he has also passed. Top ones are 1920's while the bottom ones are 1930's.

At that SN, either style of grip is possible, but I'd think the 1920s style is more likely.

This is the set that is being sent to me.

Were the 5" or 6" barrel more common?

Thanks

I've never seen any K frame square butt hard rubber grips. Seen plenty of round butt hard rubber grips though.

That's a great one. I'd proudly own and shoot one like that.
