Default Cheap is the only thing it had going for it

Picked up a refinished and rusty nickeled 5 screw Highway Patrolman. I had just had to save it. Mechanically the gun is great and all the numbers match.

Since the collector value is 0 I think it needs to be customized, I’m just not sure what to do with it!

Let’s brainstorm some ideas!

How about just a refinishing....Love the trigger shoe , don't remove it.

Bead blast and parkerize or phosphate finish, what a great woods gun.

I stripped it down and it’s currently getting a good cleaning.

Going to see what the finish looks like after that.

I'd polish it with Flitz and see what it looked like. If the pitting isn't too bad it may blend in and make it livable with.

I love a good project on a shooter grade target gun. The sky's the limit here! Anyone can have an N .357. I'd be tempted to go with something unusual. .44-40/.44 special or .38-40/10mm convertible with 2 cylinders? It's especially nice that' it's a 5-screw with a recessed cylinder! Remember, pre-war non-ribbed barrels will screw right on and I think they look so much better!

Yea, lets talk. How about a mechanical report here. If it functions OK,
go shoot it. Still more pics and leave that shoe alone. How much was cheap?

Take the trigger shoe off; they really raise the risk of an ND if used with almost any decent quality holster.

Strip the finish, cut to 5", rework the finish to some kind of pure utility finish, and make a woods gun of it.

Mechanically it’s great, timing and lock up are good. The bore and cylinder charging holes are rust free.

I will get more pics tomorrow once I put it back together and polish it back up.

Cheap was under $300 after it’s all said and done.

Holy smoke, did you get a great deal! I love resurrecting old, unloved S&W revolvers and giving them a second chance at life. Please post some more pics of your progress.

If it's good mechanically you certainly didn't get hurt on that. I'd go one of two ways if it were mine: I leave it as-is and use it as a beater, or, since I love projects, I'd send it off to Fords for a blue job. I'd finish it off with some fancy grips, maybe some Roper style targets from John Culina. A third option would be to simply save it as a source of spare parts.

There's always the .357-44 B&D. That would be a real classic custom! All it would take is a reamer and a set of dies.

What I did to the 1970 one I found was send it to fords and made my on personal 27 out of it with a master blue and added a extra fancy john culnia set of french walnut grips. yes, you collectors laugh, its not original, but its a beauty and I love to shoot it and no, it has no collector value, but you should see people oogle and ouggle when I bring it out for a few rounds on the steel plates. Fits in with all those rifles I have with nice walnut and hand checkering stocks and deep blue bluing job.

Since your into it so cheap send it off for a change to blue and a snub job, as low as you can go. Did I forget to mention a change to .44 special, that's my favorite caliber. Not that 44-40 wouldn't be bad berries, I like .44s, not much else does it for me.

If it has no collector value as it is, I would refinish it. There may be several ways to go. I would look at all the options and eliminate what is not of interest to me, and then pick from options that remain. The first thing I would not do: Dip it in molten black plastic and make it look like a Glock Revolver.

Trigger shoe definitely has to go. I hate it! You may just enjoy shooting it like it is, once you've removed the trigger shoe. Did I mention I hated the trigger shoe? Have fun with it!
By the way, if you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost you?

.44's and .45's are not too hard because barrels are available. Unless something has changed, reboring which would be needed for 10MM or .38-40, is hard to get done.

Leave it a 357 and have it cut for moon clips and chamfered while it is in for refinishing.

Nice score, you could have the nickle stripped and then have the gun engraved, make it a BBQ gun. So many options with a N frame.

Cut it to 5" and have the barrel and cylinder nickel plated and the frame blued. A 5" pinto Highway Patrolman would be quite the unique gun.

I would heed H Richard's advice and try to polish it out with a Dremel and felt Bobs first.

If that didn't turn out the way I liked, I'd have it refinished in nickel, convert it to .44 special, install a barrel no shorter than 5" with a red insert, install a white outline (if it dosen't already have one), have those dark handles repaired and cleaned up and left that dark color and, stick it in a good, heavy leather chest rig with an extra speed loader pouch.

You would have the finest go anywhere, do anything revolver in your zip code.

If you keep you eyes open 45 barrels come along usually under $150, Best thing to do for cylinder is have a 44mag cylinder reamed to 45 colt, as 45 colt cylinders are rare and if you found one may well be a big throat one from a 25-5. You can ream a N frame 357 to 45 colt but, that gives you a short cylinder that won't handle the longer cast bullets. If you use older 44 mag cylinders you can have a recessed 45colt. I have 2

44 barrels are around to and a converted 357 N frame cylinder from those makes a great recessed 44 special cylinder.

Clean her up with some "Mothers Mag" or "Flitz" and call it good. Never be a collector anyway, so enjoy a nice shooter.

You could use it to pull the bullets on overloaded .38 specials. (Just a reference to another thread.)

I'd just take the Flitz and a rag to it for a time or two, or three or whatever I felt it needed. Can't hurt it much. When I'd polished it as much as I thought was helping, I'd follow up with a few coats of Ren Wax.

The stocks I'd clean and refinish as needed.

But I'm cheap on stuff like this.

SInce you have so little in it, I would not change the caliber. If it’s mechanics are as good as you think, I would send it in to S&W and get it re nickeled. If I had a nicer pair of grips or maybe even Target grips I would change them out. If not I would strip the ones on it and use some tuna oil. Then I would keep it. You would have a very nice gun that looks great and functions perfectly for years to come.

Waiting for pictures...... after home makeover!

Well...... how hard is it to strip the nickle??? or is it nickel?????

Maybe cut the barrel to 3 1/2 or 4...... how about 5 inches.

Hard chrome ....... woods gun!!!!!

Personnal opinion.

Clean it up the best you can.

Enjoy shooting it.

You said the only advantage was being cheap.

If you go overboard on it. IE changing caliber, shortening the barrel, refinishing it (if it isn't a hack job).
You most certainly will:

1- loose your advantage.
2- add nothing to the valour.
3 - maybe even detract some.

Just my 2 cents.

My vote is call Patrick Grashorn and get a set of his elk antler grips with lots of bark left on and get a good holster preferably leather and belt rig maybe a couple of speed loader pouches practice with it and find that sweet spot load that balances power and accuracy wow .How many guys get a chance at a Hyway Patrolman that they can carry and shoot without worrying about scratching ect. But if you must refinish go with nickel and the Grashorns and get fancy tooled leather rig built with old school cartridge loops in other words cowboy it up and use nickel plated cartridges .Then invite your friends over for a outdoor old time BBQ tell them to wear their BBQ guns . Either way I hope you will keep your friends here updated with range reports and pictures maybe even a plate of BBQ or at least a picture of it .

I anguished over buying that gun! Mostly for the diamond Magnas. Glad to see it went to a good home.

I would have tried to keep it cheap. Clean, lube, and shoot! I'll be watching to see what you do.

It is a 5-screw, so I'd be tempted to do more with it as a Model 28 than say a 3 screw. Not that there is going to be any difference in the final product as far as shooting and handling characteristics,,I just like the older stuff.

A caliber conversion to 44sp or 44-40 would probably be my first thought. Using a M24 bbl to keep the rapid taper or use a 29 bbl as a sleeve project to keep the orig bbl contour.
Probably cut down the length to 5" or some custom length, though the 3 1/2" N frame is beauty of a revolver.
Patridge front gold bead sight.

Polish the metal and engrave. Some small gold accents, just gold cylinder and bbl bands perhaps.
Finish in probably a coin/grey finish.
Tooth of the Pachyderm service or Magna style grips (my choice again).
Otherwise a nicely figured class act wood like French Walnut w/checkering. Nothing Blingy like those Zebra and Bubinga type wood grips.

It's a great gun to do a project on. But even if you do nothing more than clean it up some and just use it as-is,,it'll never let you down and still shoot just as well.

Oh man I hadn’t even thought about the engraving route.

I should have it cleaned up and back together today and I will post some more pictures.

Sell the grips and get half your money back. Put on a set of Pachmayrs and keep it under your truck seat.

Well I got it cleaned up and hit it with some glitz metal polish. The stocks we soaked in acetone and given the once over with some boiled linseed oil.

I think the next step is to find some on to remove the nickel plating form hammer and trigger or to just go buy a new set.

I’m going to leave the finish as is for now

Wise choice. But you took the shoe off? If it shoots good and functions,
leave the hammer and trigger alone. That HP just speaks to you. Even the
Magnas. Well done.

Good eye! I honestly forgot to put it back on and didn’t notice until it was put back together.

I love what you have done so far, and that would have been one of my suggestions. The only thing I may do now instead of getting a new hammer and trigger would be to strip the original and try my hand at case coloring and reapply the shoe.

Ok now there is one question left unanswered .How does it shoot ? I'm betting that gun will be a shooter . I will be watching for the highly anticipated range report on this one . This gun is one of those that just speaks to you I guess it's because honestly their are so many possibilities from leaving it as is to refinish and engraving with gold accents either way or anywhere in between you have a great revolver I appreciate you shareing it .Im sure we have all set back and thought " man if it were mine I would ----------" . Great thread .

You might do well to feel uneasy within 100 yards of "Southern bubba's...truck gun", lest he sees the whites of your eyes behind that coal dust!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The OP got a killer deal on that ole girl. And here we are telling him how to spend his money on conversions, finish and engraving. I want to see a shoot report.
