Default 1916ish Model of 1905 4th Change

Have posted this before but wanted to include a couple more pictures. Hope you all enjoy. The year is around 1916ish. Also wanted to ask if any knew why there would be no "Made in USA" stamp on the frame of the gun? Thanks for the help!

The "MADE IN USA" stamp on the frame did not start until mid-1922 (and continued until the four-line stamping started in 1948).

Just curious, but is there a star stamped anywhere on the gun? It could be ahead, behind, over or under the SN on the butt, back of cylinder, or bottom barrel flat. I have seen the star in all of these positions. Is there a date stamp on the right side of the grip frame front strap in the form of 6.24 or similar? The gun looks like it has been re-finished, but of the quality only the factory can do generally. Either the date or star would be confirmation that at least it had been back to the factory for some major service.

I know that some admire those angled photos made famous by Ichiro Nagata and other gun mag photogs. But I appreciate seeing some side-on photos of both sides of the gun, no wild angles. I think this makes it easier to see just what you have.

Just a thought, especially for those wanting gun ID's.

In this case, I can't even be sure of the barrel length.

I am curious if anyone in your prior post commented on the finish? That is a great looking shooter, but not a good candidate for a collector. The best indicator of a refinish using your pictures is the front of the sideplate. The seams on a sideplate on an original factory gun should be almost invisible. Your gun shows the affects of a buffing wheel getting too close to the edge and dishing the metal. Also, S&W did not use a high gloss bluing in the period of your revolver. I am adding a couple pictures to help you out if you were unaware of the finish issue. First is a close-up of the front of your sideplate and a similar vintage 4" that has an original finish from the factory.

I do not want to criticize your gun, since it has a very nice appearance and will be the talk of the gun range, but since most posters on this Forum keep buying more S&Ws, this is something to look for with your next purchase. These are fine shooting revolvers.

glowe,

To answer both of our questions his original post in the first thread stated: "The owner said it has been re-blued;"

Here is the link to his original thread: Model of 1905 4th Change Age?

I assume you read my first post in this thread where I questioned the re-finish?

As to the age of his revolver I have the closest number in my lists I believe, 25048x, shipped 03/20/1916.

I am aware of the refinish work. The seller informed me of it, but due to its age and scarcity in CA (for me), I was completely willing to purchase it. No it is not perfect nor a "candidate" for collecting, but I love it and will take care of it. Thanks for the info!!!

That is one long name for that little shooter...looks a lot like an M&P I have.

That is a nice looking revolver.

IMNSHO, there are many degrees of "collecting". I collect the firearms that I like.
