Default .38 M&P 1905 1st Change Logo Question

Round Butt , 4'' SN 928XX .
I sent this revolver to the factory in the early/mid 70's for refurbish/refinish (blue) .
It now has the 4 line "Made in USA '' .

Question......it also has a large sideplate logo. Was this sideplate logo orginal to the date of manufacture or added at the factory at the same time as the 4 line Made in USA ?

Thanks
Bob Guilfoyle

The 4-line address you mention provides very interesting and valuable information. It is known that for some time during the late 1940s when older revolvers were returned to S&W for service, the 4-line address was stamped as a part of the service. I personally have never seen one like that, and frankly could not understand how a single-line address could have been overstamped that way without being very evident. Yet some say that it was done, and further that the pre-1923 unstamped frames were not given the 4-line stamp. Your example provides evidence contrary to that. I believe the S&W logo on the sideplate may have been done at the same time. SN 928xx suggests probable shipment at around late 1906-early 1907 based upon nearby SNs on my list.

Re-stamping of non-contemporary logos and other markings continued until at least 1974! That year I left a 5" 2nd Model .44 H.E. at the factory for a simple re-finish. (Should have left well enough alone!) I don't recall if the 4-line address was added but the following were done:

1) It was on a 1917 frame, SN in the 15,000 range, and so had the rounded top strap with "U" notch rear sight. The top of the frame was re-shaped to the post 1922 flat top which removed over 1/2 the rear sight notch depth leaving virtually no rear sight!

2) The current large logo was stamped on the sideplate, so high that it actually ran over the top edge of the sideplate! This was in addition to the original small left-side logo under the thumbpiece.

Overall the revolver was, quite literally, destroyed by an inept polisher at the factory doing what should have been a simple re-finish. There were very few, very minor, small marks on the gun that only required a final polish to correct. When I got it back the next May it had been reduced from a very nice functional, and rare(!) revolver which had been destroyed both cosmetically and functionally! I sold it a couple of years later for $85 I recall, it was too painful to keep!

Default Too long ago to remember (for Me)--i have Allminers

When I got the gun back from the factory I can remember being confused about the words "Marcas Registradas" appearing on it as I thought to myself that I had never seen any Spanish (latin ?) inscribed on it beforehand .

This revolver does not have the small logo below the thumb latch .

I have seen picts in The Standard Catalog of very early .38 Hand Ejectors with the "large" logo on the sideplate but cant remember if this particular 1905 had it there when I sent it off to the factory .

If it had the monogram on the left side, it would not have had it on the sideplate also. At least I don't think I have ever seen an original Model 1905 with it in both places.

Default The more I think about it.........

The more I seem to recall that there may not have been any roll marks on the frame or side plate at all until I got it back from the factory .
