Pawn shop round butt nickel M&P
When I need to do a transfer through a 01FFL I use a local pawn shop. Nothing of interest in his cases for the last 6-7 years. Monday saw an old nickel M&P with ivory (?) grips.
I was an active S&W collector a few years ago but then refocused back to strictly US military S&W's. Today ran back to the pawn shop and gave in to temptation. Serial 348279, I usually avoid nickel and am not into ivory grips. However, it looked original and very respectable condition for almost 100 years old. I'll send off or a letter today to see if original nickel and start the search for correct walnut stocks.

Very nice nickel M&P. Since there is no "Made In USA" it probably dates to 1922 or 23. The hammer and trigger are still case hardened and the pins haven't been polished flat. Remove the ivories and check the grip frame for any rework marks or date codes like 8.46 (August.1946). Also check for a block"N" on the grip frame and barrel flat. I have an earlier nickel M&P and the "Mushroom"ejector rod tip is case hardened instead of nickeled. Nice gun!

Nice M&P. I bet it's original nickel. Also, the ivories would probably be attractive to other guys if you decide not to keep.
Congrats on your find!

Serial 348279 suggests it shipped in 1920. The closest SN on my list is 3445xx which shipped in 6/20. Is there a B prefix to the SN on the barrel? or a capital "N" stamped on the rear face of the cylinder or on the grip frame?

Thank you DWalt. No N or B any place, under grips, cylinder rear, or barrel flat. You have opinion of convex walnut grips or recessed brass medallion. In my usual thinking the serial number places it in on the dividing line. But that's just a generally teens vs twenties grips.

Very nice 38 Hand Ejector Military & Police, 4th Model. I have one with sn 384XXX that shipped May, 1921. These were going out as fast as the factory could make them from the end of WWI well into the 1920s, so I would estimate last half of 1920. I have never come across any S&W M&P made after 1919 with gold medallion stocks, so convex walnut diamond service stocks or black hard rubber are almost certainly correct for your revolver. I do, however, like those Ivories and nothing wrong with a valuable set like those on any 38 M&P.

For those that keep track of serial numbers...
This old M&P, serial 348279, was shipped on 27 June 1921 to the Mahan Co in Hazard Kentucky. A quick google search indicates that there were lots of Mahan's associated with the coal industry.
The letter confirmed 6" barrel & nickel finish with walnut grips. I have hard rubber grips at this point but continue to look for nickel.

1921 walnut stocks should look like this set on my 384XXX revolver. They should have the convex top section without medallions.

I really like your nickel M&P in a round butt. Might be kinda hard to find the correct grips for it. You don't seem to see the round butt as much. But I'm partial to those ivories too!
