Updated--What would you do in a gripping situation such as this?
UPDATED BELOW AT #28
a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
After learning a bit about guns and grips, and discovering to your utter horror that not only does your 1955 5" pre-27 have grips that are not matched to your serial number -- they are Politically Incorrect grips that do not even belong on your model:
Incidentally, you really enjoy shooting this gun and it is very accurate.
The grips are excellent examples for what they are:
I would have considered getting genuine ivory magna's, but now that is not an option.
So in the words of the immortal Dr. Seuss: What would you do if it happened to you.

Noooooooo.... those stocks belong to a model 58, and they are scarce birds. Sell them, stipple some other, less rare stocks.

I'd find period correct magnas on eBay for whatever they cost. I did the same for a 1950 pre 27 and the numbers were amazingly close and the fit was also. All it took was a month or so of daily checking

There was absolutely no good reason to get an all correct 5" pre-27.
So of course, unable to resist the relentless psychological pressure exerted by the evil-eyed-enablers on this Forum
(I hold Ditrina and Iggy particularly responsible for my downfall, although others have contributed)
I've already been there and done that
The gripping question remains: What to do with Politically Incorrect PC Magnas?

Do those PC magnas make you shoot crooked? If not leave them where they are until you find a model 58 to buy.
They look pretty durned spiffy to me.

The gun with the Politically Incorrect grips shoots spectacular!
But I really feel for the unknown owner of a 58 who is unable to concentrate during the day or sleep at night for the lack of Politically Correct grips. He or she might even be a member of the Forum. I am upset just thinking about it.

Keep it, shoot it, enjoy it.
Incorrect grips matters only to collectors and nit pickers.
Guys, its only a piece of carved wood, move on.

I see two possible solutions, one is a nice set of Kieth Brown Roper style grips and continue to shoot the snot out of the said revolver the other is to stick a set of Pachmyers on it and do the same, no loose in either case (except your wallet in the case of the KB grips)

The other thing you can do is ship the offending gun to me ( I do have my FFL) until those mental issues are addressed. Or, I have a 4" M-57 barrel, find a cylinder and you are most of the way to political correctness by making it a .41 Mag. I am here to help you!!??!!!

Friend, your offer clearly comes from the heart
But you realize not the havoc it would wreak
Even to my enemy I would not inflict what you selflessly suggest taking upon yourself

I don't understand the political part! How are the grips political incorrect on a revolver? (I can understand it on some rifles).
I would either shoot as is or sell them like SAFireman said, and get something else

The grips on a 58 are Plainclothes PC grips
These grips on a pre 27 are clearly Politically Incorrect

One last time
The 58, introduced in the 1960's, was the first model to have Plains Clothes (PC) grips on an N Frame
PC also stands for Politically Correct.
Thus, Plains Clothes grips on a pre-27 from the mid-1950's are clearly Politically Incorrect.

If it were me ( not that it matters) I would have on it whatever feels, and looks good to you. I have a 28 no dash, 6" from 1960. It wears Herrett target stocks. Works for me. I have a mint set of S&W Diamond Targets for it also. Many of my revolvers wear targets. If you can get the "correct stocks" go for it. As you well know, prices keep going up.
Peace & Harmony be with you. Bob

I bought a model 58 back in 1966. Those PC magnas was miserable for shooting full bore ammo, which was the only thing available.
Couldn't afford a pair of S&W targets on a new cop's salary so I destroyed the grips for the hardware and made this set. Carried the gun on duty for 13 years.
Finally got hold of another pair of PC magnas a few years back just cuz, but I sure ain't inclined to put them back on the gun for shooting purposes.

PC grips were available for the N frame starting in the mid 1950's. Leave 'em on there they look great to me.

On behalf of the Forum, and to relive you of further anguish, I have a M58 which yearns for its PC grips. It (grudgingly) wears a spiffy set of genuine combats, which appeal to its martial sensibilities. Nonetheless, the yearning continues. It's a sad, sad situation. And it's getting more and more absurd...not unlike this post.
To remedy this, we could meet at opposite ends of a bridge, in the dark of night, and exchange grips. Or there's FedEx

Obviously, there are two solutions to this dilemma (wait for it, wait for it...)
Get a grip
Or stock to your guns

I have been searching for a Smith from 1955.
Ease your pain and angst.
It's not healthy to obsess about these things, especially as they were darn near FORCED on you by this bunch of evil eyed enablers.
Send it to me and feel the pressure lift off of your soul.

Swapping out the PC's
The new ones (shown on the grip seller's gun 28-2) will look like this:
BTW I want the Forum to know that I am not heartless--I do feel for the pre-29 suffering the loss of its original grips. Nevertheless, although my empathy is sincere, I will not lose any sleep over it.
