Help with age of an old 5-screw 38 Special
Trying to help out a friend of mine. He was cleaning out his grandfather's house after he passed, and found this gun in a desk draw. He was wanting to know the age, as his grandfather was a deputy, and thought that it might be his old service revolver.
These are all the pics that he sent me.

It's a pre model 10 38 Special caliber. Used to be know a M&P. Probably the most popular police revolver

If the SN is 615175 as it seems to be, it probably left the factory around 1930-1932. During the Great Depression, guns could sit in factory inventory a long time before shipment, so without a factory letter ($75) the best anyone can say is that it shipped the early 1930s. Collectors would not call it a pre-Model 10, that term usually applying to M&P (Military and Police model) revolvers made in roughly the 1948-58 period. But this one did evolve to become the Model 10 in the late 1950s. As you probably suspect, the grips are not original. The patent number stamping on the hammer began in the late 1920s, and ended prior to WWII.

Appears to be a 1905 4th change. 5" barrel? Plastic Faux stag grips.
Just oil and a cotton rag. Please no steel wool or a re-blue.

I have 628152 that shipped in May 1931.
Clean that one up and use it. I hope your friend remembers his Grandfather every time he handles it. They are sweet shooting revolvers.

Thanks for the info, will pass it along. That is all he really wanted was a bit more info other than it was a 5-screw made from 1905-1955. LOL

What about using any brass wool to clean it? It wouldn't mar the steel like steel wool would, but with a bit of oil, would probably remove the rust.

0000 BRONZE wool and oil will help to remove the rust and not harm the original finish. I bought my last package of bronze wool at West Marine.

Ditto - except I bought some "fine" bronze wool from Ace Hardware (they have a lot more stores and are a little easier to find)
