Plenty of shops will transfer in a model 17 for one.

I don't know about "plenty" but here is what I said in Post #46:

How they get away with it I don't know. You'd think it would be picked up in an audit as I know very personally of other "pre-list" guns without pedigrees that have been picked up in audits and the dealers got slammed hard by "you-know-who"!

So, in this case, I am not talking what a dealer has done in the past or might now still be able to get away with under the AG's radar. I'm talking about Massachusetts law as written... even though we both know that dealer compliance on some "lesser provisions" and "gray areas" is not always 100%.

Do you disagree?

And this is what you said in 44

I usually can spot a re blue, I think.
But if it's done extremely well, I probably have been fooled.
Then again, Sometimes a gun just looks too good!
For example, the gun is near 100%. But the serial number matching grips are about 80%.
Wow! It's magic. The grips were 'used' but the gun never left the safe!
Or the non original grips are also near 100%.
Those pieces usually have a 'story' and a large price tag.
Buyer Beware!

I can see that my initial attempt not to be overly wordy is what bothered you.

Okay, it should have read: "And it breaks my heart that none of them can be legally transferred into Massachusetts unless they have a prior MA pedigree because of our laws, "lists" and regs."

Maybe I could have also added: "... unless you have a great relationship with a MA dealer who is willing to take a risk for you."

Hope that solves the problem.

If the problem goes further into the realm of what a MA C&R license holder can or can't do or can usually get away with, I'm going to punt. That's a topic I won't debate because each C&R holder in MA seems to have a different concept of his or her responsibilities and obligations under MA law. I can only state what the law is and point out the gray areas. I can't say from personal experience how well or poorly the law has been followed.

Another thread going on right now in this forum is discussing K-22 finishes. If the information in that thread is correct, I shouldn't be seeing a bright blue polished finish on the gun in question... ... unless it was special ordered that way I guess (or it was refinished at some point).

Anyway, I'll go back next week and take a much closer look, including under the grips if they will let me do so. Depending on what I find, I'll either buy the gun (i.e., put it on layaway) or go back to my plan to pickup a brand new Model 17 "Classic" when I can afford it.

Man , you have made me appreciate the comparative freedom I enjoy here in Wisconsin. Renewed my Concealed Carry permit via internet on Sunday ; certificate arrived Friday. Picked up a new piece at the LGS this week , no waiting period. Gun shows abound.

Sorry about horrible state government , and your brake job.

Thanks. Right now my endless "money pit" truck's brake job *is* the far greater crisis if you can believe that. For a poor old man who budgets and watches every penny, a $1K+ surprise hit is practically Armageddon. I still don't know exactly how I'm going to come up with that much cash by Monday or Tuesday. We don't have pawn shops.

Well, I went back today and... unless I am going crazy... what I found was not the same K-22 that I had originally found. The dealer says he had 4 of them and what was there today was the last of the bunch.

Anyway, I looked this one over good and decided it was not worth the tagged price. It's in good shape for sure but the grips were not original and were mismatched to boot. On this one, the finish appeared to be all original with the usual loss of bluing around the muzzle... but otherwise it was pretty darn nice with little or no visible corrosion. I'd have taken it with $100 knocked off because of the mismatched grips, but they weren't bargaining. End of story as far as I'm concerned (at least for now).
