Post some pictures of it. That would be a start to identify the sidearm.

I'll try and walk you thru it.(bear with me because I still get lost sometimes)
1. Click on post reply at the bottom left of my post.
2. look down 2 blocks under additional options once the reply screen appears.
3.in box #2 "attach files", click on manage attachments. You'll get another screen.
4. in the "manage attachments" screen in the first box, "Upload File from your Computer", click " choose file".
5. the next thing you'll see is a screen for your hard drive. Find the pic and double click on it .
6. you will see that files name to the right of "choose file".
7. Click "upload". that should transfer the file. You can do this 5 times if you want with one post. If you have more than that then you'll have to hit post reply and do it all over again until you've posted all your pics.
NOTE: they have a size limit on the pic size so keep the pics under that size.
Hope this helps.

It appears to be a s&w 32 auto from the 1920's era, more pics and higher resolution would certainly help. These guns,if that is what it appears to be, are relatively rare as there were less than 1000 made.

Mr. Townsend,
In the Standard Catalog of S&W 4th edition on page 340 there is a photo of what looks like your pistol. Here's the quote from SCSW#4:
"Clement design early pocket Semi-auto background information:
Smith and Wesson's first venture into the semi-auto pistol field consisted of a design based on the Belgian made Clement pistols. Initial production was for a S&W proprietary cartridge, the .35 S&W Auto. This was followed by a .32 ACP version. An experimental .30 caliber version was made at one time but was not introduced as a production item. A Prototype was also made in .380."
That's all the info in the book. If you want more info then send a request for a letter of authenticity from the S&W Historical Foundation.
Here's a link to the S&WHF:
Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation - Home Page - Insuring that the rich history of Smith & Wesson will continue for generations to come
Here's a link to the letter request:
http://www.swhistoricalfoundation.co...quest_form.pdf
That's all the information I've got. I'm a revolver guy and don't know anything about S&W's pistols.
Sorry I couldn't help you out any more than that.

It is an S & W .35 Automatic, model of 1913. It uses the .35 S & W Auto cartridge, which I understand is interchangeable with the .32 ACP round but has a lead bearing surface on the bullet, presumably for less wear on the bore. Several members here have an interest in these and posting more photos and the SN will likely bring forth more information. Hope this is helpful.

Looks like the 1913 .35 Auto to me. Pretty rough condition, I can't guess a dollar value. No ammo available that I know of.

.35 S&W Ammo
I found 2 places that mfg .35 S&W Auto ammo...
Colorado Custom Cartridge Company LLC
Buffalo Arms Co.
Colorado Custom do not have any in stock ( I bought the last 2 boxes they had available on Gun Broker - GB name is mtshooter
Buffalo Arms is hard cast bullets. They still might have some available. I found them through Google.
I haven't received either batch yet so I can not say how good/bad it is. I'll post an updaste as soon as I get to the range.
Here is a link to Buffalo Arms web site with the ammo info....

Just do a search on the forum for the Model 1913 auto pistol. There have been over the past few years several long and exhaustive threads about the gun, its history, the .35 Auto cartridge and the question of whether or not you can shoot .32 ACP through it (you can).
PS: For your convenience, start here:
