Quantity of pre 27's from 1950-1957
Does anyone know the possible number of pre 27's made from 1950-1957. I realize that they were numbered in the same S series as many other pre models, but any educated guesses? Thanks, Ron

I've got one, so that makes five so far.
Mine is a 3.5" from 1950. Looks like it led a hard life, but it still works great.

Count me in for a 3.5 nickle.
Guess that would be eight.
This may go on for a while.

According to the SCSW:
About 75,000 S prefix N frames built between 1950 and '57 (S75000 to S149999).
9493 .38/44 HD model 1950
1200 .44 Military
3799 .45 Military
6039 .38/44 OD
5050 .44 Target
unknown .45 Target 1955 (no pre-1958 production number given)
< 2768 .45 Target 1950 (total made between 1950 and 1961)
unknown Highway Patrolman (no pre-1958 production number given)
6000? ..44 Magnum
So, the rough known total of non-.357 Magnum (pre-27) N frame production between 1950 and '57 is 34,000. Add the number of pre-25s (2-3 years' worth) and 28s (3-4 years), likely several thousand extra, subtract from 75,000, and there is your number - twelve!

murphydog, Looks like we are going to account for all "twelve" according to your calculations. I was hoping to have a super-rare pre 27 and it is so.....I am all smiles! HaHa Ron

I'm down to five with blue finish, the cataloged barrel lengths.
I was up to 10 at one time and sold/traded off duplicates.
I have first dibs on a 5" nickel owned by a good friend.

I recall reading Skeeter Skelton's articles and how he wanted a 357 magnum in the worst way when he first joined the Border Patrol in the early 50s, but could not locate any for sale. His boss carried a 3.5" and that is what he sought, but located a 5" later and talked the owner ito selling it. He grew to prefer the 5", of course, and it remains the gun many of us most strongly associate with Skeeter.
The 357 Magnums were certainly scarce, even when they were being produced.

Gee, that makes 30 - we are almost at 0.1% of the estimated production. At this rate we should have them all accounted for in another 1998 days...
