1955 Targets SN Rare Or Common
When you get back into the 1950's is it common or uncommon to find Target Grips on a K or N Frame Smith that have a serial number that matches the gun? I have a box full of target grips, since I don't like them on my guns. They do go back into the 1950's. Not one pair has a SN. These are 1955 N Frame Targets. Small football I've been told. No SN as usual.

I have seen a few photos of numbered '50s era Target stocks but never any in their wooden glory. Doc44 probably has .

I have seen a handful of serial stamped targets but IMO its uncommon since it really wasnt necessary being they covered all but the backstrap.
The pictured diamond target stocks are actually from the 63-68 period and have been refinished

It's uncommon many seem to have been on 45 target guns.
Just something I've noticed is many are in the 160 161 thousand range.

Target stocks with a serial number stamped on the right stock panel are seldom seen. Some of the stocks on early 1955 Target revolvers and early .357 Combat Magnums have a serial number stamped on them. Some match the serial number of the revolver, some do not. I believe S&W was going to number these stocks to the guns, but decided early on it was unnecessary and discontinued the practice.
Also, if a revolver was special ordered with a set of target stocks, S&W sometimes numbered the stocks to the gun. I have two sets of N-frame target stocks with a serial number and one set of K-frame target stocks with a serial number.

I have yet to see a numbered target stock. Granted I don't see thousands of S&W every month, but I do attend auctions and gun shows.

I have a set of non-relieved N Frame Target Stocks that were numbered to a gun. They were badly damaged and the gun shop removed them and installed rubber grips to sell the gun. The non-relieved target stocks went into their junk box and I rescued them and DWfan restored them for me. No I did not end up with the gun (1950 or 1955 model I do not remember which) as I had seen it two weeks before with the damaged stocks and had returned to the shop to try and purchase it. Got the stocks though.

Set of target stocks with 166215 stamped on the right stock panel. I assume S166215 is 1955 45 Target revolver, but don't know for certain.

I have owned three sets of Non-relieved Target Stocks and ALL three were serial numbered. So I'm just lucky I guess! Two are in the 130,000s and one was in the 160,000s. I still own the two earlier ones because they are earlier and in better condition. Like Bill said most of these were found on 1955 Targets (Pre 25) and are Walnut.

Out of curiosity...If a revolver was ordered from the factory was it possible to ask for a set of target stocks and if so would the targets have been stamped to match as well? That would be something...

Target stocks could be ordered as an option for probably any model. In a few instances, the stocks were probably numbered to the gun, but this would have been a rare occurrence.

I have a Highway Patrolman serial #S115235 that has matching non-relieved target grips. Serial number puts it late '54 to early '55.

My 1955, S165***, shipped about 1956. The non-relieved diamond stocks are numbered 147***, a year or so earlier. Period correct but no match.

Actually what peaks my curiosity is that if a revolver was ordered from the factory and normally came with magnas which were numbered to the piece, could the order also request that a matching numbered set of targets be included. I would think it a rarity for there to be any specific model of revolver that was ordered and received with matching Magnas as well as equally matching Targets, a matching set. I can readily understand how any revolver could be ordered with either Magnas or Targets and that either one be numbered to the piece nothing odd there...but to have a matching set of both stocks numbered to a specific revolver...that peaks my interest.

I am sure an order could be placed for a revolver with two sets of stocks, but I doubt many (if any) were. I have seen many invoices and have not encountered that situation.
