One of the Earliest 44 Magnums
S130847, shipped to H. H. Harris, Chicago, IL for Charles Connors on January 30, 1956. This Magnum is one of the first eight or nine made by S&W. It became Charles Connors personal revolver and was kept in his family until 1996 when it was purchased by my good friend, Ray Brazille. Ray sold it to me since he knew I was interested in early 44 Magnums. The revolver was shipped with checkered stocks, but they were replaced with smooth stocks since they are easier on your hands when shooting magnum loads. The revolver shows signs of being carried and shot, but not abused. It is one of my favorites in my collection. Click on the photo for a better look.

S130927 was the first production 44 Magnum completed on December 15, 1955. It was sold to Rex Firearms and shipped on February 21, 1956. I believe it was subsequently engraved and inlaid with gold and silver by Alvin White and used in Rex's ads in the American Rifleman beginning in May 1956. The first 44 Magnum shipped was S130806. It was completed on December 29, 1955 and shipped the same day to R. H. Coleman, Remington Arms Company.

I haven't been around much but it looks like you're still doing as good with the photography as the collecting.

Bill:
Charles Connors as in "Chuck" Connors, a.k.a. "The Rifleman"?
...Beautiful .44 Mag.

RK...Not the same Charles Connors. Charles Connors was the President of S&W's Midwestern Sales group and received a lot of nice guns. Most of them were sold, but he kept this one. I don't know if Chuck Connors received a 44 Magnum, but Clint Walker and James Arness did with their names engraved on them.

If that piece was holster carried, it does not appear from the photo to have suffered much from the experience. A very well cared for revolver indeed.
I presume that the original stocks were permanently separated from the gun at some point during the decades?

I think the checkered stocks were replaced with smooth stocks to make shooting it easier on the hands. I assume the change was made in 1956, but that is a guess on my part.
