Pre-10 2" Nickel Detroit P.D. Issue?
Hi there,
Came across an interesting one locally. It looks like a nickel 2" pre-Model 10 in .38 Special, backstrap marked 'Detroit Police Department' followed by what I assume was a badge number. I've only seen a few blurry photos so far, so can't say for sure the nickel is original, but the colors look correct and the barrel looks proper from what I can tell, not cut down. Old school grip add-on does seem to make police use likely, especially for a plain-clothes back in the day.
Anyone else ever encountered one like this? Serial apparently C208xxx
Sorry the images are so indistinct, all that is currently available to me.

right grip looks like a Bahimi(sp) grip that just slipped inside the waist band and was held by the grip. the hammer and trigger have good case coloring so I would bet it its original nickle. if you get it please show us more pics. lee

Yes, they are real and quite well known among collectors. A nice one got away from me on GB last year when the bidding went out of my then-limit; I think it went for 8-900.
Check out this thread. I think there are some snubbies in there:

Lots of threads on the Detroit guns. Just use the search at the top of the page and use the Goggle function. Here's one.

Thanks for the info guys, I knew about the O.P.s and full size 10s but had never encountered a 2" before for DPD, in blue or nickel.
Speaking with the owner now to try and find out what sort of price he's hoping to get for it. Anyone have any current ballpark figures or suggestions to throw out with the RB, right slip-on grip, and so on? I normally stick with pre-war civvie M&Ps, so P.D. guns aren't an area of specialty for me (yet, anyway, haha).
*In re: Absalom's response below; I too prefer original stocks/grips only, waiting to hear now if the owner has the original right panel to go with the slip-on or not.

That slip-on grip adds nothing; for me the absence of the original grip (unless he still has it) would be a considerable hit on the value. But I could still see myself going to 600 or so (contingent on close inspection or at least much better pictures). But I do collect police-stamped revolvers, so the backstrap stamp for me drives this more than the intrinsic value of the gun.

I found mine at a local show last year and unfortunately it too had a Barami hip grip in place of the original right panel. I started to toss it when I put the stags on but then I noticed the Barami grip was stamped on the inside that the company was from Detroit so I decided to keep it with the gun. Two inch nickel pre 10`s don`t grow on trees so you better try to snag it if you can.

Both the Barami Hip Grip and PGS's "Hideout" grips are made in Michigan and you'll commonly find these on guns from this area.
