May have screwed up at the gun show
Small local show on Sunday; a real hit and miss deal. Sometimes good, sometimes really bad. Ran across a decent prewar HD, with some kind of repro service grips. Gun otherwise was probably 85%, maybe even a little better. Asking price was $550, probably only slightly negotiable. Couldn't pull the trigger. I have three others, one prewar and two postwar, so it wasn't as though I needed it.
My experience with regretted buying decisions is about 50/50 between wish I would have and wish I hadn't; there have been some fairly spectacular did, and a couple of really spectacular didn'ts. Probably should have bought it.

We all go thru that...if I'd bought every one I should have I'd have double...let it go, wasn't meant to be....

Thank god that there's some sellers asking way too much for what they are selling or I'd need a much bigger safe.

You do not have space to store nor time to fondle all of them. I'll bet you've already got a better one. Get it out and oil it and you'll forget the one at the show.

I'll leave the reassuring warm fuzzies to the others .
Based on the prices I've been seeing, yeah, if that pre-war HD really was all-original and 85% except for the stocks, that would have been one to jump on at that price.
Then again, I don't already have three. That may influence my perspective .

Seems like your meeting my 3 friends , Would A , Could A and Should A !
When I am in doubt I will usually ask for the sellers card , ( must have a dozen on my desk now ) the luster seems to wear off the next day
BUT I have had some real bone headed misses That today I regret
Was chasing a black power pistol ( replica Walker 44 ) it was closing on GB in the afternoon That AM I am looking through the local trader and a guy is selling a colt 1903 hammerless 380 with original pearl grips for $400. I think well if I dont get the BP walker I will call the guy later
Well I miss the bid and it sells , I call the colt guy up and he just laughs and said " the gun sold an hour after he posted it for the asking price " Thats a Should A
Guy in a local pawn show had a 586 no dash ( and hadnt had the factory modification ) In about 85 % shape Said he would let me have it for $475. Said didnt have the cash on me at that moment , He countered that If I gave him a deposit of 10% he would hold it for a week till I got back down his way ( he was about 100 miles from my home )
I told him I didnt have $50 cash on me ,He said he would take the deposit on my credit card and refund it when I got there with the cash. I just didnt feel like driving back there again I said no Thats a COULD A !
Would A's to many to write here
As my Uncle used to say " there is always another deal "

What's the old proverb,A Bird In Hand....
There recently was a Model 624 for sale on the forum at the same time as one was available locally.Ended up with neither of them due to my own faulty plan to get both.

I don't worry about the ones I'm on the fence about, I worry about the ones I have not a clue about (usually not S&W's).
Yup, you may have left a few dollars on the table, but still a hassle to unload. I try not to buy guns just because they're a good deal.

Some years back I went to a shoe with buddies. I took limited cash so I wouldn't make an expensive impulse buy. I spotted a beautiful SAA priced way above my paygrade. Wow I'd love to buy it but I didn't bring enough cash. Right away one of my buddies said. "No sweat I'll spot you the cash."

You can't have everything. And even if you did, where would you put it? That's sort of my situation. I have run out of space for anything else and my wife informs me of that fact daily.

"May have screwed up at the gun show..."
Referring to your premise , no , you did not screw up. Had you paid the price , gotten home and said "Dang - what was I thinking? I already have three HDs and this one doesn't even have the original grips!!!" - THEN you would have screwed up.

A couple years ago I walked away from a performance center Schofield in nickel for $900. And at the same show a couple of months later I walked away from a Beretta Silver Hawk 20 gauge side-by-side for $900. Today those two guns would be worth about $5,000 combined. So we've all been there.

Don't beat yourself up. I passed on a k32 in about 90% +/- condition for $800 because I was 22, didn't know ***** from applebutter, and poopooed on the 32 long. My dad kept saying I've never seen one, you should buy it, it might be rare. Now, 32 long is one of my favorites, and k32's are untouchable for me.

If I had a nickel for every good one I passed on, I could afford them all.
