Have the opportunity to buy a very nice K22 from a friend. Gun dates to early 1947 #8676. Only bluing loss is small area at muzzle. Stocks numbered to gun and are excellent. Box is in good condition, paperwork is for a later model. Asking $1000. Do I need to pull the trigger on the sale?

I would be much happier with the price at $800. $1k is really pushing the high end of the value for that gun. Without the box these can be bought for $550 - $600 without searching too hard.

Man, that is a close call. $1000 is a lot of money but so is that gun.
I personally do not see any profit on the tale end, right now.
Just work with your buddy, with cash, all ways some wiggle room. best

That's a tough call. If I didn't have one I'd do it but I have my dad's which is also a 1947 and not too far from your serial number. I can tell you it will be a good shooter.

Buy it! NOW! You can spend hundreds of dollars looking for one that good. Travel expenses, gun show admissions, food, etc. Then, when you find one, it will be reblued and they will want $2000 for it!

Yep, maybe a little bit too much, but how often do you see one like that, with a gold box, which sell for $200-300 whether it matches a gun or not..

I'd agree with those sentiments. If the extra $200 doesn't mean too much to you, you should get it, especially if it has the SAT. Not too long ago I passed up a K-22 very close to this one (but a few years newer), also with a box, and for $900, which was as low as the seller would go. I had some regrets.

You snooze, you loose. Procrastinate, someone else will buy it out from under you. OK, maybe the price is a bit on the high side. But how many others have you seen? Don't listen to the internet searcher guys, they fail to add in the extras to get it to you. Shipped one overnight lately? Just buy the gun and be happy with it.

You don't see them every day in that condition with the box and original stocks. The price is on the top end but not unreasonably so. See if you can negotiate it down to $900, but otherwise I don't think I'd let that one get away for a mere $100.

Plenty of comments already, but from what I can tell you are looking at a near 100% gun. If so, easily worth $900 without the box. K22 Masterpiece revolvers bring more than the K38s and are currently selling for around $750 in 90% condition at quality gun auctions, add the 20% buyers premium which is another $150, plus shipping. Box might bring $150 in the condition it appears, so do not hesitate to buy that one. You do not see these guns for sale in mint condition today and it is a MADE IN USA single liner.

If you collect K-22 variations the One Liner with new style ejector rod goes right between the LERK and the 4 liner and they dont pop up too often LNIB.

On the other hand if you dont care about early K-22 revisions there are plenty of cheaper K-22's out there.

Engineguy, thanks for the sage advice. I'll check in with my friend and see where it goes.

As a side note, the paperwork shown with the gun is way newer than the gun itself - by at least 10 years. That said, it adds absolutely no value to the package. The box being un-numbered might bother some people, but there have been other examples of various S&W's shown on this forum with boxes that appear to have never been numbered.... I have one or two of those myself.

I'm seeing muzzle wear on both sides of the barrel and the 5th screw does look a little buggered up. Also, is it the flash or is there a problem under the Made in USA? I know these are nitpicking but the difference between a 99%+ gun and a 95% gun can be a few hundred dollars. Plus, with the wrong paperwork it really makes me wonder if the box is original to the gun or just all put together. Just some more to think about.

Jeff, Good eye on the screw, it is buggered a little and the area under the address appears to be a flaw in the finish not loss of finish. I was aware of the later paperwork , but I can use it for my M17.

Well personally, I would have to agree with most that the gun even with a 4 digit serial number and in near new condition is probably a bit overpriced. Actually, if you will PM me the sellers name and phone number I will call him and let him know what I think. Just kidding.

At 77 years young you have to consider how badly you want it and how valuable is $200 to you at this time. If $200 gone means that you don't eat next month then I would have to say I would pass. If the extra $200 just means that you have to forego the oil change on the Mercedes for another month, then I say go for it. Personally I change my oil every 10,000 miles whether it needs it or not.

IMHO, it is about $200 overpriced. Now, if it was a LERK, it would be a whole new ballgame. Buggered screws are a huge deterrent.
The box is worth $100 probably, more if it was numbered to the gun. If the gun had all its accouterments like the SAT and proper papers, $1,000 would be a great deal. Big Larry

Update: Didn't buy the K22. May try to move some duplicates to make room in the safe, and then get back with my friend. He is not actively selling it and said it is resting in his safe.

UPDATE: Made the deal on the K22. My friend decided to put it on one of the online auction sites. Couldn't let that happen. Made the deal for $900. I'm happy, it is a sweet shooting gun. He's happy also. I guess that's the sign of a fair deal.
