Default Diamond K Targets turn out to be N FRAME

Lucked into these the other day. Look like early diamond targets with black washers, maybe early 50s. No ser. # inside. Looks like they have a slight palm swell by Escutcheons. Also looks "scalloped" by where the rear of the trigger guard meets the stock. Can any one tell if these are original or altered? Also what they may have been on (i.e.)? Thanks Joe

JUST DISCOVERED THESE ARE N FRAME NOT K FRAME.

That style would have been in use in the approximate 1952-58 period. I haven't seen any with the little scallops, but I can't say they are not original. Others will know. Probably used on K-22 and K-38 revolvers.

The K/N frame target style with diamond style pattern around the screw hole and football shaped speed loader cutout started in the mid to late 50s as a replacement for the diamond target grips that had no cutout. In 1965 S&W started a phase out of grips with the diamond pattern.By 1968 almost all new revolvers were being shipped without diamond grips.

Only a factory letter can say for sure which style grips were on a gun when it shipped from the factory.

It looks to me that they are altered a little in the area you referenced. They could have come on almost any target model K frame, or simply purchased from S&W and added to a K frame after it shipped. They are still nice stocks and my favorite for a K frame square butt! Those old diamond targets just feel right to me.

Diamond targets with the football relief were from approx. 1956 to 1967/8

Well I just went to put them on a model 15.............to big at the top, stood out too proud at the horns. YUP N frames. Does any one know if N frames of the same era were just as or less common then K diamond targets.

Yes N frames... I can tell by looking at them. I would say they were producing more K frames during this time frame and say that K-frame Target Stocks are more prevalent than N's. PM me if you want to sell them, I need a set.
