I have a reason to join the forums now, just got a m1917
I do have a S&W Shield 45 which I love but have never joined the forums. Now I truly have a reason to join. A while back I got to shoot a buddy's 1917 and fell in love with it. I am not a revolver fan by any means. I don't even own one currently as I have sold every one that I have ever bought. I never had any love for them. I reload a lot of 45ACP and liked the idea of having a revolver in that caliber, plus the M1917 just called my name when I shot it. I know I could have gotten one of the newer 45ACP revolvers like the 625, but I wanted a beater. Just a pistol I could plink with and throw in the truck or carry in the woods if I so desired. I've been looking online and locally for a while but the prices always seemed to be $500 and up. I just happened to find this M1917 abomination for what I think is an OK price. It was born January 1918 I believe. The sights have been mucked with and combined with the finish wear, I know it has minimal if any collector value which works out for me. I paid $325, and since it is local I will pick it up next week and won't have to pay any transfer fees. I may have paid too much, but it's mine now. I'll break it down once I get it, crack the case and check out the internals, and possibly replace springs if needed and cerakote if it has rust or needs it.

I like that sight setup. That old warhorse looks like it is ready for another 100 years.

Welcome to the forum. Your first S&W revolver is a N frame... you've come to the right place. Congratulations on your '17.And, please don't cerakote any part of it.

You didn't overpay. I am a sucker for these and would have snapped it up for that price. Welcome to the forum!

Thinking Muley is talking about the sights.Probably give you a pretty good sight picture and shooting is what its about. Enjoy. By the way those are probably not the original grips and of another N frame. The military guns didn't have any emblems.

CERACOTE AN M1917??? DON'T LIKE REVOLVERS???
I'll give 5-to-1 odds that you are an illegal alien (As in dumped from a UFO, at altitude... and landing on your head.) without a green card, and voted at least ten times in Chicago for our (Thank God!!!) ex-Community Organizer.
I'll lead the Vigilante Committee to track you down if Ceracote ever touches that divine instrument! If you absolutely feel that you have to mess with it, at least give it a finish befitting it's heritage, such as a nice Parkerizing job!
(Mumble, mumble, mumble...) Why would anyone want to DO such a thing?

Holy front sight Batman!
Not a bad price assuming it shoots straight. The sights on the originals are kind of lacking when it comes to precision shooting. Hopefully those are at least a little more functional than the originals.

HAHA, nope. No alien. Never dropped on my head....that I know of. And I am not a fan of anything from Chicago. I like crisp 3# single action triggers in semi-autos. I've had various revolvers in the past, but I just never fell in love with any of them and ultimately sold them or traded them away. I have a dislike for most spongy striker fire triggers and I can't shoot heavy DA worth a **** compared to single action. The only double action I don't mind is the modified 6# DA pull of my CZ75. That is why I'm already considering spring changes, etc to improve the trigger, and I haven't even shot it yet. I know I should shoot it first, just planning.
As for Cerakote, nobody locally does parkerizing, nor would I trust any of the local smiths if they did. I plan to leave it alone unless there is a lot of rust on the inside. I cerakote myself so it is basically free to do.

Parkerizing small stuff is rather easy if you can follow instructions and do simple math to get the solution correct. You can get everything you need from Midway for $60.
But, really that 1917 has earned its wear. I would just give it a good wipe down with a lightly oiled rag once in the while and shoot the snot out of it.

That front sight is a lethal weapon all by itself! I'm putting one of these on my radar...minus the big blade though. Nice snag..don't color it..

Nice old veteran. Please don't do something crazy like Ceracoating the old boy. If anything, you can "parkerize" it as steelslayer suggested. Welcome to the forum

I would like to find one like that to make a snubby out of...just the right price too. I don't know if I could cut up a US Property model, though...
You will likely do what you will with it, but if you are taking votes, I vote to leave it as is...that's a pretty low serial number so it likely saw duty 100 years ago in the Great War.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the 1917. I saw it on GB and had I not been distracted, I might've bid on it at least once.
I'm in the "leave the finish alone and shoot the fire out of it" camp.
Give us a range report once you get it and based on that would determine what changes, if any, I might make.

It better be. As many firearms as I own including some $2k AR's I've built, I haven't been this excited to get a new firearm in a while and I can't even say why.

Sounds to me like you're approaching the slippery slope that a lot of us folks are on when it comes to S&W revolvers.
It's probably not too late to divest yourself of that old 1917 and walk/run away.

The non US Property commercial model 1917 are worth a bit more than the military ones. Not so a Brazilian though.

That was my thinking as well...if I saw a cheap enough commercial model that was all beat up, that would be different...the Brazilian is what I have my eye out for.

there are a lot of comments on the sights. Any clue what the front sight came off of? what about the rear sight? I will be picking it up in the morning

The rear sight is reminiscent of the old Bisley type sight which was adjustable but which could not have the click-type adjustments. Looks like a lot of steel there in front, but the originals went as far in the other direction toward being too small. That looks like it would be a great gun to try out loads, try your hand at minor tuning and fixing, and just generally enjoy shooting. IMHO, you did very well indeed.
Regards,
Froggie

Stop talking about parkerizing, or cerakoting. Leave the original finish alone. Clean it up real well and enjoy it. I'd even leave the sights alone too, if it shoots straight. Enjoy it for what it is and what you bought it for, a shooter!

Picked it up today and stopped by the range for 5min on the way home. It's definitely a shooter in SA. Smooth and light. The DA is heavy and gritty. 18 shots at 10 yards.

I like it. The DA definitely needs to be fixed. Has a catch halfway through that I don't like and wasn't in the other one I've shot. It isn't smooth at all. Could not shoot DA for **** with it. My wife even likes the pistol when she held it after I got home. Guess I'll be on the lookout for another one.

Mine has kind of a heavy DA trigger pull but shoots more accurately than in SA. Odd. Congratulations.

I actually like them. They weren't hard to load up. Don't have to worry about spring fatigue like a magazine so I plan to order a bunch more.

I get mine from Revolver Supply. If you google that it should pop up. They WERE having a sale where they'd send you 20% more than your order but I don't if it's over yet.

Good luck with that 1917. It's your gun, and they do make broad spectrum of colors in cerakote. I have seen some bake on finishes that looked like Parkerizing but were much more low maintenance. It could look good. That front sight would take some time for me to get used to!
I bought a bunch of moon clips from Ranch Products about 10 years ago for cheap.

Update on my revolver. I got new pachmayr grips and a new holster. It is so much more comfortable with the grips.

The holster appears to be well made. Nice thick leather. I got it off eBay as a new holster and the person selling it is the maker.

Internals might just need a cleaning and it may shoot better. Or an old armorer to slick it up. Good buy! I think you have been bitten by the revolver bug!
