Here is a better illustration, using two K-38 Masterpiece revolvers. The bottom gun (the five screw) has the sharp shoulder Magna stocks (1946-1952). The upper gun (a four screw from 1956) is wearing the newer Magna stocks with the tapered shoulder. I think this pic shows the difference pretty well.

Great info. Thanks for the explanation. Your a living, breathing encyclopedia. I don't know how you remember all this stuff. I have been tucking away all these little bits of info. on a cheat sheet and I put it in my wallet so when I'm at a gun show, I'm prepared. Thank you.

Man did I ever have a brain fart or just call me stupid. The grips on my K22 ( see first post) are the original grips for my M&P.
Before I inherited these, they were switched. At least one of them is now period correct. I wonder it this is one of the signs of dementia.

Jack, the number is 812612 with a magnifying glass and old eyes. Didn't know the post war M&P's came with this type of pre-war magna stocks. Do these have the same value and are these the same stocks on the 22/40's? Learn something new every day!!

Spitdog, glad the grip swap worked for you, that happens. Don't want to call you stupid, what is your name? Larry

Jack do the stocks on that M&P number to the gun and if so are the washers inside silver colored (aluminum IIRC) or are they of the same shape and style as the pre war disc but in blued steel ?

There are some M&P revolvers with numbers lower than S818072 that shipped with the postwar style Magna stocks. Examples include SV807355 (March, 1946) and SV810708 (also believed to have shipped in March, '46). SV809121 is another, although I do not have a ship date on that one.

Larry, Yea, I just never paid much attention to the M&P since I had the K22 and was researching and spending spare time on that. It's was Jacks request of your SN on your stocks that trigger my interest in the M&P which lead to the connection. Sam

Yes, they do.

They are in the white. And I'm pretty sure they are steel. Next time I have one of them out of the safe, I'll do the magnet test.

Here is a photo of those very stocks:

BTW - I posted this same picture earlier in this thread. See Post #9.

They did, but only for a short period, immediately after guns started shipping to civilian distributors. I've not found any that shipped later than March, 1946.

Yes. The only way you can tell the difference is by the serial number stamped inside. I have several pairs (not sure exactly how many). All of mine have in-the-white retaining washers. There were some that were blued, I just don't own any. I show several of them in my database, however.

Larry, My range report I'm afraid will never show the true capabilities of the K22. I'm sure I'm the only guy on the forum that makes multiple range trips and uses the same target due to no holes in the center.

But rest assure I think I have finally figured it out! And a report will be coming. I just need to move!

Sam

I have invoices (compliments of Bill Cross) for mine and three more shipped with adapters. These three (and mine) are most certainly outside the norm, as they were given to the recipients (and the invoices were created so as to charge off the cost to the Advertising Account). The cost, incidentally, was $14.55 which I figure was the cost to make the gun and the adapters, as the distributor price (for the gun) was in the mid $20 range somewhere, near as I recall. I suspect (only because it makes some sense) these guns were shipped with the adapters because they were gifts---and S&W wanted to gussy them up as much as possible (without covering them with engraving).

Two of these four guns went to gun magazine editors (Sharpe and Keith) in the hope they'd say nice things about them----or else no more freebies for YOU!! The other two went to individuals involved with firearms in the Boston and Providence police departments----perhaps as thanks for buying a bunch of police guns---or maybe just because.

From a purely dollars and sense business aspect, it's strange the cost charged off is the same in all four cases----leaving one to wonder about the shipping costs. They were all shipped by "Prepaid Express" (railroad express I reckon)---but to significantly different destinations which strongly suggests significantly different costs----especially for Keith's gun---North Fork, Idaho being a far piece from Springfield.
