44 Magnum Cokes Bottles?
Here is my 6 1/2 inch pre-29 (Correction: Mod 29 no dash). Are these the elusive Coke Bottle grips? They feel quite different from most other N-Frame grips.

From the side they sure do. Could you post a pic from the rear to indicate a slight palm swell?

Looks great janman!
I really like yours too Bill. Id rather look at "usin" guns than the pristine wear white gloves before you touch them safe queens. (Nothing against the pretty ones either....I like them all)

They do seem to fit the hand in a "magical" way versus N-Frame Targets.

CORRECTION: This is my 4 screw Model 29 (no dash), serial number S219xxx. My pre-29 is a 4 inch barrel. I got them confused.

Remember that the larger checkered area is enough for ID. This grip type was the only N frame target grip to feature such a checkered area.

I know about the checking field. I have three mint sets. I just wanted to see a rear pic. I had a turnip farm, never fell off the truck once. Wink, Best, Mike

S&W described these stocks as Special oversize stocks made of Goncalo alves. The special (in my opinion) refers to the larger area of checkering.

Been looking at cokes for a couple years now and am finding the palm swell to vary greatly.
Some i would really argue that they had no noticeable swell at all.
Maybe the swell variation is from the factory grip worker or maybe the age of when manufactured.
Wouldn't be surprised if the type of wood came into play.

Are there any N targets with a larger field of checking but no palm swell?
Just curious. Best

Didn't know that. But same guy for maybe ten years?
Wonder how long it takes to make a pair start to finish. Lot of grips to put out in a day.

I've talked here on the forum about meeting him 20 yrs ago at the S&W Outlet in Maine, where his niece was the Mgr.I was actually surprised that he had been a one man operation since the early 1950's up until his retirement.Great guy,and a great hour long conversation.

Oversize is another way S&W described target stocks. I have a 1950 45 Target with the first pair of target stocks made and the box is marked oversize stocks. The revolver was shipped in 1950. I really think the palm swell was an unintended consequence of manufacture and only recognized by collectors (about thirty years after the first coke bottle stocks appeared). If it was planned by S&W, the company would have included it in their description. Also, by the early 60s, the palm swell had all but disappeared.
Mike...the answer to your question is no.
Bill

What I got out of this post:
1. No K frame Cokes.
2. N frame Cokes had a swell at palm.
3. Larger field of checking.
4. Walnut
5. Only one guy made them.
6. Made from 1955 to about 1962.
Am I close? Best

Cokes
No one has mentioned the shape of the grips from the front to the back! If you compare the bottom of the cokes to any other N frame target grips you will see what the major difference is! IMHO this is what makes these grips sooooooo comfortable and it is what has produced the palm swell

A couple of years ago a friend brought me a dark blue box with a set of unused cokes inside. No gun. The box was found in an attic of an elderly lady who had passed away. My son put them on an auction site and the cokes brought $800.00 and the box brought $400.00. We have no idea what happened to the gun.

Yes, cokes are more oval shaped on the bottom. Check post #18 in this thread.

Jeclect has it about right, the swell if there actually is any present has ittle to do with what you feel when holding a set. The feel is due to a number of curved surfaces working together to achieve that feel. The oval shape varies and many of the earliest "cokes", had a base much more reminiscent of a 1980s Target stock.

Maybe this photo will help you see the differences.
Another dead give away is the top of the checkering.
Since the top of the Coke Checkering is wider, the top 'bend' looks deeper.

Never say never BUT Coke bottle stocks are almost always made of Goncalo Alves wood; not Walnut.

Look like the grips on mine which I purchased in the early 1980's, new. Came in an oak? diplay box which I still have somewhere. Good shooter. Killed a few deer with it.

Not that I know of, at least from S&W, but the corresponding Colt target grips (Gen 1) of about the same time period for the .357, the OMM, and the Python were fully checkered.
