Default 5 screw .38 special Mod. #?

Looking for help in identifying the model # of a 5 screw revolver I received from my grandfathers estate.
I have pics and tried to load them but I dont know what a URL is, maybe a photo sharing app, idk?

1- hand ejector
2- K 136944
3- .38 Special CTG
4- 4" barrel
5- Rear sight - adjustable, post war
6- Strain screw in front grip strap
7- No swivel or ring on butt

There is not a model number inside the frame when the cylinder is open.
I really wish I could load the pics.
Thank you

Being a 4" .38 Special with a K serial prefix more than likely a K-38 Combat Masterpiece aka "Pre Model 15" from around 1952.

If it has the original wood "Magna" grips they would likely have the plastic medallions that were only found around that year.

A 4" adjustable rear sight 5 screw K frame 38 Special sounds like a Combat Masterpiece. As stated in another post, Smith didn't give revolvers model numbers until 1957, which would be the tail end of the 5 screw revolvers. My bet would be that you have a Combat Masterpiece, which would become a Model 15.

Not that i want to, I just want to know so nothing gets damaged, including myself or someone else.

To resize:

If you are on a Windows computer move your photos to a folder on the desktop.Create the new folder by right clicking on ant empty space on the desktop>Go to New>Click on Folder

Right click on a photo and the choose edit>then choose resize>check the pixels box>Horizontal/Vertical put 800 in the box with the largest size>click OK>click X in the upper right corner>Save

Do that to resize all your photos. You could also lower the size by putting 600 or make larger by putting 1200

The .38 +P ammo is loaded within spec of what your gun was designed to handle but.....That being said if you call S&W they will say "Do not fire +P ammo in any gun that is pre Model marked (like yours).

This errors on the side of safety but honestly if your shooting paper targets no need to use +P ammo .

If you want to keep +P ammo in it for home defense and occasionally fire it not a big deal IMO.

All day long----but +P likely costs more, might possibly cause more wear and tear (if you can measure wear and tear in teeny-tiny increments), and might make a bit more noise.

I have resized them to 800x1200, but i do not understand how to attach.
when i click on the the little picture to attach them, it opens a drop down window that says,

Smith-WessonForum.com says:
Please enter URL of image
HTTP://

I do not know what that is.
Thanks for being patient with me.
It really is a beautiful old gun, the first gun I ever squeezed a trigger on, many years ago. It was a holstered gun, kept in a soft case. The few times I remember it being out was to shove it in the glovebox on our way to visit family in Oklahoma. (not for family, for the road trip, lol)

You need to upload your photos to a photobucket account to use the url icon, if you click "go advanced" there is a button marked "manage attachments". Click on it and you can upload your images via that route.

At the bottom of the box where you type your message you need to click on Go Advanced>then go down to and click Manage Attachments.

When manage attachments is clicked a box will pop up with the word Browse in the top left.Browse to the photo(s) and click once on the photo. At the bottom right click open> then click upload.

When this is done the photo is attached to your post. You can attach about 5 photos per post.

When finished uploading the photos post your message

You will love that Combat Masterpiece. They and the later Model 15's are superb revolvers.

No model numbered K frame revolver had five screws. The fifth screw was eliminated in 1956. Model numbered revolvers did not show up on dealer shelves until 1958 and by then they were all four screw guns.

I agree that the description makes this gun a .38 Combat Masterpiece. The serial number indicates production in early 1952.

Looking forward to seeing pictures!

we sponsor a private friends only turkey shoot at a ranch in the foothills of the Sierra's on the way to Kings Canyon every year. after the turkey shoot everyone heads over to the rifle range on the ranch. that was about 3 weeks ago. the second time i squeezed the trigger on it after the first time was with grand dad 40+ yrs ago. I know it is just shooting a gun, but it was very emotional, esp when i handed it to my 15 yr old daughter as my grandfather did with me. i could hear his big burly voice as i was explaining to my daughter how to fire it and what to expect. she instantly fell in love with it after the first shot, guess it is time to change the Living Trust, lol. Fun Shooter and affordable!!!!!
