Car Gun
Brought it in for a cleanup and waxing. Figured it deserved a picture. Just a 1948 5 screw 38 Special I keep loaded in this rug in my glove box in the truck. Grew up with these. When I was kid, everybody dumped their garbage along the railroad track behind where I lived. Remember that? Talking real garbage. . .cars, major appliances, everything. Conducted a lot of penetration tests on car doors and windshields as well as freezers and woods of all types. So, I know what it will do and how to do it. That's why I carry it. It will still do it.

What's the serial #? It looks too clean for a truck gun...

C 73XXX. It's because I just cleaned it and it lives in its rug. Pretty much a duplicate of others in my collection. My truck is pretty clean too. . .a vintage Avalanche.

Up north, we don't do that garbage thing…
There is an eight shot air weight .22 in my console, in a holster. It has some strange two digit model number?

Seems like kind of an odd 'accessory' to keep (leave unattended) in your car or truck.

Yeppers, still one of the best all-around handguns out there.
Just wondering, do you normally carry ammo selected for it's penetrating ability, and if so what's your choice?

I've noticed that's a relatively common thing to do in the southeast.
A quick check on the OP's state stats yielded:
Cars are the biggest source of stolen guns in some cities. Atlanta police recorded about 1,250 stolen gun reports last year; 69 percent of those involved vehicle break-ins.

I consider the above post a PSA. Very notable stats. My wife and I live in GA and both have Georgia Weapons Carry Licenses. At times, for various reasons, there can be a great temptation to leave a handgun hidden in the car. But just almost never do it for fear of theft.

I'm next door in SC, and hubby and I both have car vaults for temporary use if a no-carry zone is encountered.
For some around here, even having had multiple occasions of guns stolen from their cars doesn't make people secure their guns in their cars, or even lock their cars.
I've also noticed an awful lot of people leave other expensive valuables in full view in their cars. While it's a generally low-crime rate area, once in a while there is a night when large numbers of cars get ransacked, but the careless behavior is still prevalent.
I guess those things came easy to those folks.

It stays loaded with lead semi wad cutters. Also, stays concealed in the glove box between the seats. Never have had a car of mine broken into in my life. Where I go and where I park makes a break-in highly unlikely. If that happened and the gun was stolen, I would just replace it. . .not a valuable gun. One might argue that the wrong person might then be in possession of my gun. Here in Middle Georgia, the wrong people are already in possession of all the guns they might want or need. That can't be changed. I see them lined up in pawn shops and gun stores buying High Points and Jiminez Arms pistols all the time. A background check only checks the person buying the gun. It's like trying to keep teenagers from getting beer. Shootings here in Milledgeville, Macon, and Warner Robins are continuous daily events. Every night on the news. A lot like people killed in car wrecks around here. I will always have a gun at my right hand when in my vehicle without having to think, "Did I remember to grab my gun before leaving the house today?"

I live in the mountains of nc, and EVERY. SINGLE. VEHICLE has a "truck gun" in it. My old k5 has 2. Even my tractor has a spot where I can stash my old high standard.

A heavy barrel model 10 is about the most workmanlike revolver one could think of - perfect for a car gun.

"...If that happened and the gun was stolen, I would just replace it. . .not a valuable gun..."
I have an issue with that attitude. Making it easy for the thief is a bad idea.
It would be unfortunate if you were confronted with your own gun.
Rant over.

Had a lot of those road side dumps in the hills of NW Ark. I also shot a lot of car doors, stoves, metal barrels and probably a small fortune in cork finish bottles which are now worth real money.

Sounds about right(?)I had my sweetheart believing that it was so light that it fell up if I dropped it. But eights shots, wow!
BTW: there is Very little crime in Montana, but it is the tough winter, hellacious wind and extended below Zero weather that keeps the riffraff elsewhere.

"Vintage Avalanche"? What the heck is that?
Chevy didn't start making them until 2001.
Sorry, but nothing 16 years old gets the label "vintage".
I have socks older than that!

That S&W is too pretty to leave in a truck. Buy yourself a Glock, Doc. There are lots of former LE handguns out there to be had cheap, no need to lose a fine revolver.
There are various "storage systems" for vehicle use available. Here is one of mine.
This is my Glock 29 and two spare mags. Usually I tote my Glock 17 or Beretta 92FS and two spare mags in this first aid kit. This pouch cost $25.00, IIRC. There are other designs as well.

What do you do with your garbage? Are you saying that no one ever dumps their trash illegally?
Back in the late '50s, I rode with my granddaddy to dump some trash. It was some property that belonged to a neighbor that let folks dump there.
It wasn't until the early '60s that we had trash pick-up. A private company provided it for something like $2 a week. I was living in Maryland at the time.

"Poor" DocB ... ... He puts up an innocent post describing his car gun - and it brings a few of the critical commenters out of the woodwork? Stuff like how dare you leave a pistol in the car, that's a collector's item, etc. Seems like a pretty informative post to me, and he posted a nice pitcher. I enjoyed the pitcher and Liked his post. Can't we all just get along? ... I choose not to leave anything in my car most of the time - but that doesn't make him a doofus. Last but not least, I'm not in any way suggesting Doc can't defend himself here on SWF! Added: when I do carry something in the car - it's the least expensive but still reliable pistol I have (Sorry - I know this is SWF but S&W does not have a 9mm as compact as the CM9)
Edited to add: I don't carry anything in my car because I drive to the Marine Base at least twice a week. They would cuff me up, confiscate and charge if they find me or anyone else carrying concealed and trying to enter the base. Sure enough, as forgetful as I am, the day I forget a pistol in the car would be the day they tell (tell, not ask!) me to pull over for a dog check ...

Well we got there and there was a big sign and a chain across across the dump saying, "Closed on Thanksgiving." And we had never heard of a dump closed on Thanksgiving before, and with tears in our eyes we drove off into the sunset looking for another place to put the garbage.
We didn't find one. Until we came to a side road, and off the side of the side road there was another fifteen foot cliff and at the bottom of the cliff there was another pile of garbage. And we decided that one big pile is better than two little piles, and rather than bring that one up we decided to throw ours down.

I apologize for getting off topic here. For what it's worth, when I went to high school in Upstate NY the student parking section had pickup truck after pickup truck of rifles and shotguns mounted in rear window racks. I've also lived in Montana and Wyoming and pretty much always had something in my car. A person's 2nd Amendment right is clear. In the few months I've frequented this forum I can say that compared to the other firearm forums I've frequented for years this is without a doubt the best forum around, as evidenced by its members.

OK maybe not "vintage". . ."classic"! Now I have to think about having somebody confront me with my own gun that they stole from my car. Ummmm. . .think, think, think. Nope. Didn't change anything. Still not worried about it at all.

Ya know, we live in a different time now. In my ill spent youth, we had a local dump. All nice and legal like, run by the local government. It had a big tall smoke stack where the stuff was burned before the ashes and what not were "dumped" into the pile. I guess PC stuff has changed things. The scrap metal in that hole would bring big money these days. Probably back then, too if anyone cared.
I was an explorer, too. And probably a miscreant. I failed to recognize property lines in my hiking. A bit east of the dump I discovered a covered wagon, or the remains of one. Pretty cool, but I didn't find any arrows or bullet holes in it. And to the west of the dump was a shooting range, overgrown with trees making me guess its last use was in the 1940s at best. At the backstop I discovered a bunch of expended bullets. Dad reloaded but didn't cast, so I left them there. And old junk cars just left. No idea how they'd gotten there since the trees were all grown up. You'd be shocked at what you'd find just out picking blackberries. Within a mile of the house I must have had a dozen places.
I wonder what happened to all that old stuff. Guess a lot of it just rotted away. Metal wasn't well painted back then and once rust started it was gone. Around here we get lots of rain and high humidity. Old tin cans don't last more than 5 years, 10 at the most. Glass is bad but even it seems to "frost" and go away. Maybe it sinks into the soil as fallen leaves cover it up time after time.
I discovered I can still explore the far off places with google earth. One problem is tree cover hides the places. Back in the early 1970s we hiked up around "Kings Island" and down along the Little Miami River. The old Kings Cartridge factory is still there. On the west side of the river there was a maze of ground works to isolate the powder making stuff in small shacks. If one went off it would take out the others and all the workers, just the unlucky one. Kind of a shame I'm getting old and lazy. Might be fun to re-explore those places.

This is a thread that has certainly wandered from a truck gun to wandering youth. I will wander a bit as well. No intent to minimize the great post by rburg... as a Kentucky hiker myself now, I loved your post!!
I was a "military brat" father in the AF I grew up all over the place. My 12-13 was spent on Guam in the late 1950's. What a great place for adventures! Lots of debris from WWII still around. 2 Old Shermans in front of a bar in Yigo, In Tumon a Japanese light tank was still in a rusting pile beside a movie theater. Lots of pill boxes to explore and dig in. I still have several shell casings I found from the time. North field had been abandoned by the AF (in favor of Anderson AFB) so it was full of places and old "dumps" to explore. There was a junk yard we would sneak into that had huge metal tubs full of 50 cal bullets, trailers full of field radios, and other delights for the young that did not know any better. It was the a great place to explore, went back in the late 1960's in the AF myself, by that time it was well on the way to a more civilized place. Great adventures...

I was at a United States Federal Court as an observer and one of the cases was of a poor slob who lost his job at the Post Office because the guards searched him on the way out of the parking lot and they found a pistol in his glove compartment. Although he had a state carry permit it is a Federal crime to have a handgun on Post Office property, even in the parking lot.
How did they know to search his car on the way out of the parking lot. The guards were tipped off by his estranged wife, who knew he kept a weapon in the car, and who wanted make his life miserable.

Back to the truck gun, I've been asked why I guns in my truck by tourist and foreigners. It is absolutely in the norm to come up on a car in the middle of the road, man out of the vehicle going SHHH!! Taking a shot at a groundhog, crow or yote. I scared two hippie chicks to death one time. I came around a blind curve, and they were standing in the middle of the road looking at something. On the edge was a huge 3' cooter (mud turtle to you yankees). I said holy $#!+ and jumped out and rattled off 5 well placed 38 specials into it. Scared them girls to death. They promptly called the police and upon hearing what id done, communications asked "did you thank him?" They yelled a lot of obsenenities, and a lot of "hicks" and "rednecks" and left the scene of the so-called murder.

I'm admiring the poetry of that.
Where's the blow-out kit? The Second Aid container.

We didn't find one. Until we came to a side road, and off the side of the side road there was another fifteen foot cliff and at the bottom of the cliff there was another pile of garbage. And we decided that one big pile is better than two little piles, and rather than bring that one up we decided to throw ours down.

Officer: We found your name on an envelope under 'bouta half a ton of garbage.
Me: Officer, I cannot tell a lie. I put that envelope under that garbage.

Just out of curiosity, I had to go look up "mud turtle", and there were 30 different species listed. The eastern mud turtle can reach up to 4" in length. So then I decide to look up "cooter turtle", and I get: "Pseudemys is a genus of large, herbivorous, freshwater turtles of the eastern United States and adjacent northeast Mexico. They are often referred to as cooters, which stems from kuta, the word for turtle in the Bambara and Malinké languages, brought to America by African slaves." Now these ones can grow up to 17" long.
Maybe other yankees might call it one of the snapping turtle species? Like I said, just curious as to what you had there. Also curious if they make good soup; mebbe you could've invited the bunny-huggers over for lunch.

BTW: there is Very little crime in Montana, but it is the tough winter, hellacious wind and extended below Zero weather that keeps the riffraff elsewhere.
