Sometimes you buy the gun for the grips
I finally got my first set of Ropers! They came with a Model 17-4 that was in decent shooter condition wearing a fairly nice set of Herretts. The other stocks that were being thrown in were the real reason that it caught my eye. I tried to buy just the stocks but the guy wouldn't budge so I had to buy all of it.
They are in pretty good condition with a couple of dings but nothing major. Now I just need to figure out what to put them on...

I believe that these are going to end up on a K22 Outdoorsman. I'll post pictures as soon as I get a chance!

That is a good question, and I haven't decided yet.
The gun has a 5 inch barrel and it points really nicely. Has anyone heard of a factory 5 inch Mod 17-4?

I plead guilty! I just bought a 2 1/2" 66 no dash, that I don't need, for these beautiful Combats. Pretty happy about it too.

Nice stocks, but you have a 5" model 17 and didn't post photos of it? Shame on you .
Possibly but unlikely a factory job. Images of the front sight base and muzzle crown would be most helpful.

the muzzle looks well done and pretty close to factory and I honestly wouldn't have questioned the originality of it except the front sight base pin was a roll pin instead of a steel pin.
I know the factory uses roll pins currently so maybe it went back to the S&W to have the barrel chopped?
Ill try and get pictures of both soon.

The hammer on that OD is just plain sexy.
Oh and yes, I have bought a S&W for the grips. Did not hurt that it was a RB either.

I have bought four revolvers because of the grips on them. All were Colts.

I bought a 2", RB, M&P recently. When I first saw it I was a bit disappointed because I thought it had a modern set of Altamont "Rosewood" (plywood) grips on it. It turns out they were the original S&W solid walnut grips that had taken on a more reddish patina over the past 66 years. That was the icing on the cake.
Not what your original post was about, but the wood can certainly push you over the break point when deciding whether to get it or not.
